يناقش هذا الكتاب ثلاثة خطوط رئيسية في أدب العقاد : خط الحرية وفهمه لها بألوانها ومواقفه منها، خط الجمال والفن \"الموسيقى والفنون التشكيلية\" خط \"الإنسان\". وهذا الخط يشغل جزءا كبيرا من الكتاب حيث ناقش عبقريات العقاد الإسلامية. كما ناقش عبقرية المسيح وتناول هذا القسم من الكتاب التراجم الإنسانية التى كتبها العقاد من أمثال غاندي والشيخ محمد عبده. وشكسبير وبرناردشو وجيته وابن سينا وابن رشد وفرانسيس بيكون وسعد زغلول. ومن شعراء الطبيعة كابن الرومي، وشعراء الغزل كجميل بثينة وعمر بن أبي ربيعة.
