يقدم هذا الكتاب للقارئ العربي لاول مرة فصولا في علم اللغويات المعاصرة او ما يعرف باللسانيات وقد تم اختيار هذه الفصول لتمثيل الجوانب الرئيسية التي يعني بها هذا العلم ويدرسها دراسة علمية وتبحث فصول الكتاب في الصوتيات وتحديدا في الصوت الانساني من النواحي الفيزيوليجية (إنتاج الاصوات بواسطة أعضاء الجهاز الصوتي عند الانسان) كما تبحث في النظام الصوتي (الفونولوجيا) في اللغة وعلى الاخص الوحدات الصوتية المميزة (الفونيمات) التي يتألق منها النظام الصوتي في اللغة، وكيف تستخدم هذه الوحدات في اداء المعنى وكذلك تطرقت فصول الكتاب الى علم الصرف (المورفولوجيا) من خلال دراسة بينية الكلمة وطرق اشقاقها وتحليل الكلمة الى عناصرها ومكوناتها الاساسية (المورفيمات)
