موضوع هذا الكتاب \"العصر العباسي الأول\" يبحث في تاريخ الأدب منذ قيام دولة بني العباس في ربيع الأول من عام 131 هـ حين أعلن أبو العباس السفاح من فوق منبر المسجد الجامع بالكوفة بدء قيام الدولة العباسية وانتهاء ملك بني أمية، وقد أرجعت أسباب نجاح بني العباس إلى سوى فعال الأمويين، إذ أنهم يسروا السبيل لهم باضطهادهم آل بيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وتشريدهم ونفيهم، مما أثار حفيظة الشعراء أمثال دعبل الخزاعي في تائيته التي طبقت شهرتها الآفاق، وكانت بداية بكائيات الشعر العربي، واعتزازهم غير المبرر بعروبتهم متناسين قول الحق سبحانه \"إن أكرمكم عند الفه أتقاكم\"، مما أثار عليهم القاعدة العريضة من الموالي.
