يحاول هذا الكتاب فهم إمكانات النبات وأسرار النبات وقد يكون أحداها هي حركة النبات ويختلف النبات عن الحيوان بأنه لا يستطيع أن ينتقل من مكان إلى آخر وذلك لعدم وجود هيكل عظمي وعضلات وأعصاب ولكنه يستطيع أن يتحرك في حدود المكان المتواجد به حيث يستطيع أن يدرك ويستشعر الظروف البيئية المختلفة به ويستجيب لها حيث أن الهدف من الحركة كما هو في الحيوان هو الحصول على الغذاء والماء والمأوى والهروب من الأخطار والحرائق والتكاثر فإن النبات يستطيع الوصول لهذا الهدف بدون أن يترك المكان الذي نبت فيه وذلك عن طريق عمل استراتيجيات مختلفة لمواجهه الظروف البيئية المختلفة المحيطة به.
