يتحدث مؤلف هذا الكتاب ويقول أن أخذ شعر ما قبل الاسلام مكانة خاصة في الشعر العربي فهو يمثل النموذج الادبي والقدوة للشعراء على مر العصور وفي هذا الشعر أعطى امرئ القيس مكانة رفيعة بين شعراء عصره بل قدمه النقاد عليهم ووضعوه في الطبقة الاولى لابتداعه أشياء أتبعه فيها الشعراء بعده مثل الوقوف على الاطلال والغزل ووصف الحصان والليل والمطر وأشهر ما عرف به هذا الشاعر معلقته وهو موضوع كتابي (معلقة امرئ القيس في دراسات القدامى والمحدثين) لما اجمع عليه أهل الأدب واللغة من أن معلقته في مقدمة المعلقات وأشهرها.
