تبدأ حوادث رواية سيد بطرسبورغ في عام 1869 حين استدعي دوستويفسكي من ألمانيا إلى سانت بطرسبورغ نتيجة في الأجواء الروسية قبل الثورية وتأملا جريئا في السلطة مغمورا آسرا لغزا الموت المفاجئ لابن زوجته لتشكل فورا والتمرد وفي الفن والخيال يصور دوستويفسكي وهو يلاحق على نحو استحواذي شبح ابن زوجته محاولا التأكد مما إذا كان ضحية انتحار أم جريمة قتل ومما إذا كان قد أحب زوج أمه أم احتقره وعندما يصبح دوستويفسكي عالقا في شرك الأحلام العنيفة للناشطين السياسيين ذاتهم الذين ربما يكونون هم من قتل فتاه فإنه يكشف نفسه كشخص ذي تناقضات عصية على الفهم ساذج وحذر متدين وضال ورقيق وقاس.
