تألف كتاب \"أسفار شيلد هارولد\" من أربعة أناشيد وهو يروي رحلات بايرون في القارة العجوز إذ يقتفي تضاريسها ومدنها وماضيها الآفل بعيون شخصيته المتخيلة (شيلد هارولد) التي تشبه إلى حد كبير شخصية بايرون نفسه إذ ينطبق عليه الكثير من الأوصاف التي ينسبها لبطله كان فيه احتقار مستمر لكل شيء، حتى ليخيل إليك أنه عانى أسوأ ما يمكن أن يكون وكان يعيش على الأرض غريبا عنها، وكأنه روح شاردة ألقي بها من عالم آخر وكان له خيال مظلم يخلق لنفسه الأخطار التي يكون أنقذ منها ولكن عبثا فذكراها كانت لنفسه مصدر انتصار وندم معا.
