تناول الكتاب أن معظم الكائنات الحية تعيش علي حساب الثروة المادية والطاقة علي الأرض في كل صورها ومصدرها الوحيد هو الشمس. وأهم مصنع يستطيع تحويل الطاقة الضوئية المنبعثة من الشمس إلى طاقة كيميائية هو النبات الأخضر والذي يقوم بتخزين الطاقة في صورة مركبات عضوية معقدة يتكون منها تركيبة الخلوي وكذلك يستغل تلك المركبات العضوية في بناء جسم الحيوانات والذي يقوم الأخير بأكسدتها وتحويلها إلى طاقة حركية وطاقة تستغل في النشاط الحيوي لهذه الكائنات الحية والتي تنتهي جميعها بالموت والتحلل الميكروبي إلى العناصر الأساسية التي يمتصها النبات مرة آخري ليعيد بناء المركبات العضوية من المواد البسيطة الممتصة من التربة بالإضافة للمتكونة من عملية البناء الضوئي.
