على مدى مئات السنين قرأ الناس كتاب الأمير، وعلى مدى الزمن، كره الناس أخلاق الأمير، واتهموا كاتبه بعيب أخلاقي، نسبوه إليه فصارت المكيافيلية تعني في جميع اللغات (لغاية تسوغ الواسطة) خلق ننكره ؛ لكننا لا نفتأ نبحث في الواقع عن الحالات التي يجوز فيها استخدام هذه الوسيلة الشيطانية فنبرر ما نفعله بغاياتنا النبيلة التي تتناقض مع وسائلنا الخسيسة. ومع أن الكاتب وجَّه خطابه للأمير، أي للحاكم، لكن الناس قرؤوه من منطلق أنهم جميعاً يطمحون لأن يكونوا حاكمين بطريقة ما، أو من منطلق التحلي بأخلاق الحاكم لاتقاء شره. يرغب جميع الناس أن يعرفوا المبادئ التي تحكم سلوك الحاكم. والدار تقدم هذا الكتاب للقراء من جميع المستويات، عاديين وباحثين، فالحاكم شأن عام، وربما كان أكثر الشؤون العامة أهمية.
