ذلك المشروع المتميز الذى يغامر فى منطقة مجهولة هو بمثابة تتمة لكتاب \"الاستشراق\" لادوارد سعيد ولأعمال ميشيل فوكو حول الجنسانية. فبينما يركز مشروع سعيد على إنتاج المعرفة فى أوروبا عن العرب والمسلمين أثناء القرن التاسع عشر، والروابط المعقدة لهذا المشروع الاستعمارى والمسئولية المباشرة لتركيب ذات \"الشرقي\"، يسعى \"اشتهاء العرب\" بشكل آخر إلى سد الفجوة فى الدراسات الأكاديمية التي حللت التصوير الاستشراقى موضحا تأثير الاستشراق و\"النعرة العرقية \"حسنة النية\" في خطاب الدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان\" صفحة 418، على \"تشكيل\" إدراك العرب أنفسهم لذواتهم ولبعضهم البعض منذ نهضتهم فى القرن التاسع عشر صفحة 48. وعلى نفس القدر من الأهمية، فإن اشتهاء العرب يجيب على إغفال الدور الذى أداه المشروع الاستعمارى فى التصورات حول الجنسانية والشهوة فى كتاب فوكو المهم والرئيسى تاريخ الجنسانية.
