إن أي علاقة مع تاريخ الاستشراق الآن تتأسس على منطق الصدام قد أصبحت غير ذات مضمون. وبالتالي ليس من المجدي أن نستمر في الرد على أطروحات المستشرقين المغرضة كما سماها شيوخ ومثقفون مسلمون منذ منتصف القرن التاسع عشر، او التصدي لهذه الرؤى الخاطة عن طبيعة العرب وعقليتهم. إن الخروج من ذلك الموقف الدفاعي سيجدد تعاملنا مع الاستشراق، فيحصره في نطاقه النافع، أو يحوله إلى \"موضوع\" ندرس من خلاله طريقة تفكير واضعية. إن انسحاب الاستشراق من دراستنا للتراث وعلم الاجتماع يزيد من شعورنا بجدية وخطورة المهام المعرفية الملقاه على كاهلنا اليوم. وبتخيلنا عن هذه المهام بالأمس ساهمنا في خلق هيمنة الاستشراق نفسه.
