بين العلوم الاجتماعية، وعلم النفس، والفلسفة، واللغويات، والأدب، والفنون، وابتدأ عمله النظامي في مجال علم النفس وهو في الثامنة والعشرين من عمره، وبعدها بسنوات طرح نظريته حول تطور المستويات العليا من الفكر الإنساني، ثم توفي بعدها بعشر سنوات. تعد أعمال فيجوتسكي من الأساسيات الكلاسيكية في مجال تطور النمو العقلي البشري والعلوم المعرفية، في هذا الكتاب -والذي ألف عام 1934- يحلل فيجوتسكي العلاقة بين الكلمات والوعي طارحا فكرة أن اللغة جماعية بطبيعتها، وأن الفكر اللفظي يصبح مبطنا فقط في مرحلة الطفولة والنمو.
