ربما يبدو بولانيو في هذا الكتاب، الذي يمثل تجربته القصصية كونه يجمع ثلاث مجموعات قصصية، كما لو كان يقدم الروائي وهو يخون نفسه في قصص تبحث عن رواياتها، التي ربما لو أمهله العمر، هو الذي غاب في الخمسين، لأتمها. يخون بولانيو ما يكاد يكون اتفاقا حول طبيعة القصة القصيرة من أنها تفصيلة مجتزأة من حياة عريضة، فجميع قصص هذه المجموعة تعرض لحيوات كاملة أو شبه كاملة، لشرائح أفقية عريضة زمنيا ومكانيا في بعض الأحيان. قصص عالقة بمصائر، تنتهي أحيانا بنهايات أصحابها أنفسهم، لتصل بهم إلى قبورهم. كأن قصص \"مكالمات تليفونية\" هي في جوهرها \"معالجات\" روايات مختزلة وملخصة في محطاتها الرئيسية لا ينقصها سوى إشباع فراغاتها لتصبح روايات كبيرة. في كافة قصص \"مكالمات تليفونية\" تظهر شخصيات \"روائية\" إن جاز التعبير، تعبرها الشهور والسنوات من شبابها المبكر حتى موتها أو على عتبات مصائرها.
