يحتوي الكتاب على سبع قصص وهي \"بيت الجن\" و\"آخر كأس\" و\"السهم الغائر\" و\"المجرم يحلب مرتين في اليوم\" و\"آخر دمعة على قعر البئيس\" و\"شاعر النورس\" و\"من أجل حفنة النقود\" وكتب حمدوشي قائلا في بعض الحالات، يجد ضابط الشرطة القضائية نفسه بالرغم من تكوينه وعلمه يسير بدون مصباح في ظلمة الليل يكظم غيظه يحبس ويمسك على ما في نفسه من المرارة والكرب والغم ولا أحد يرحمه ويميل الكأس ويقلبه فلا يجد قطرة ويتساءل عن سبب وجود كأس فارغ موضع ارتشاف الماء ويكتشف نفسه في موقف شبيه بالأكفاء عند الشعراء العرب يخالف بين القوافي ويجعل بعضها ميما وبعضها دالا وبعضها نونا، هو الذي لا تكسله المكاسل ولا تثقله وجوه التواني مما لا ينبغي أن يتوانى عنه.
