تتكون الرواية من جزأين يشكلان متنا لرواية واحدة، تسرد من خلالها الكاتبة الإسبانية إلبيرا نبارو، حكايات عن أطفال يكبرون في مدينة إسبانية؛ الأولى تسمى قصة المطعم الصيني \"المدينة السعيدة\"، وتحكي عن الصبي \"تشي هوي\" الذي يصل إلى إسبانيا بعد عامين من العيش بعيدا عن أسرته. وتواجهه مهمة صعبة مضاعفة، ليست فقط التكيف مع بلاد مختلفة عن وطنه، ومع لغة جديدة، لكن كان عليه أن يوازن بين متطلباته وحاجات أمه وأبيه، أما الثانية فعنوانها \"الحافة\"، وترصد حياة فتاة لأبوين من الطبقة الوسطى يسعيان لحمايتها بتقييد تصرفاتها بشكل دائم.
