هذه صفحة مفعمة بالحياة لاحوال مصر الاجتماعية والثقافية والاقتصادية بل والسياسية فى منتصف القرن التاسع عشر، يزيد من قيمتها أن كاتبها ليس بشخص عادى. وإنما رحالة عالم طبقت شهرته الأفاق هو الايرلندى ريتشارد بيرتون الذى زار مصر فى غضون سنة 1853، فى أواخر عهد عباس باشا الاول (1848-1854) وكانت مصر يومئذ تمر بمرحلة انتقال خطيرة كان لها أبعادها الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافية وفى الجزء الثامن من رحلته يزور المدينة المنورة والمسجد النبوى ويعرض للحياة فيها ولسكنها فى ذاك الحين، ويصف بدو الحجاز وأساليب حياتهم قبل أن يتوجه إلى مكة المكرمة التى سيتحدث عن زيارتها فى الجزء التالى (الثالث)
