كان للاستشراق أثره الإيجابي والسلبي في الفكر العربي والإسلامي، منذ أن انطلق في بداياته من الأديرة والكنائس ؛ مما جعل قسطا من هذا الأثر لا يخدم الفكر الإسلامي والعلوم الإسلامية، فأدى هذا المنحى إلى وقوف العرب والمسلمين، علماء ومفكرين، في مواجهة هذا الأثر السلبي للاستشراق، لا سيما ما له علاقة مباشرة بالتعاطي مع الحضارة والثقافة الإسلامية، ومقدرين تلك الآثار الإيجابية التي قدمها للثقافة الإسلامية. أدى هذا الموقف العربي الإسلامي، في وقت متأخر إلى إعلان المستشرقين التخلي عن مصطلح الاستشراق والاستعاضة عنه بالانتساب إلى فروع المعرفة، من أدب وتاريخ واجتماع وأنثروبولوجيا، وعلوم إسلامية، بتوجيهها إلى الحضارة الإسلامية والواقع الإسلامي المعاصر.
