يمكن القول إن كاتب هذه المذكرات جوزيف لابورت كان شاهدا على الحملة الفرنسية على مصر والشام بقيادة (نابليون بونابرت) من ألفها إلى يائها فقد كان ولوعا بالكتابة من كل ما يراه من مشاهدها في المعارك وفي أوقات الراحة وكان من قبل عازفا على بعض الآلات في الفرقة الموسيقية لجيش (نابليون) في حملته على إيطاليا ثم أصبح ضابط صف في الحملة على مصر والشام وكان ذا موهبة بدائية في الرسم وقد استخدمها في تصوير كثير من المناظر التي شهدها في تلك الحملة.
