يطرق الكتاب فيه إلى سيرة الأمير سبكتكني والد محمود وكان وراء عمله هذا رغبته في إظهار عرفانه بالجميل وحفظه لحق خدمة البيت الغزنوي وقد اكتسب هذا الكتاب شهرة واسعة في شتى الأمصار والأعصار واهتم به الكتاب حتى ذيل عليه ابن فندق بكتاب مشارب التجارب وغوارب الغرائب أربعة مجلدات، كما شرحه كثيرون وفي كل الأحوال يمكن القول أن العتبي قدم في كتابه هذا مادة تاريخية شديدة الأهمية.
