يسرد كتاب \"مذكرات صحفي استقصائي\" حياة مؤلفه سيمور هيرش المهنية كصحفي استقصائي كشف العديد من القضايا المحلية والعالمية حيث دون المؤلف وعلى مدى 480 صفحة مقسمة إلى 19 فصلا ومقدمة ومعالم حياته فبدأ من العمل مع والده وتولي مسؤوليات العائلة بعد وفاة الوالد وهو في سن مبكرة وأكمل دراسته في جامعة شيكاغو وتنقل في العمل من صحيفة محلية أسبوعية في مدينته إلى وكالة الأسيوشيتدبرس ثم إلى نيويورك تايمز وأخيرا إلى نيويوركر وكانت حصيلة هذه الخبرة عددا من الكتب الهامة التي فضح فيها السياسات والأكاذيب التي اقترفتها الحكومات المتعاقبة فبدأ من حرب فيتنام ومذبحة ماي لاي وجرائم الإطاحة بالحكومات الشرعية في أمريكا الوسطى ودور كيسينجر فيها وعرج على فضيحة ووترغيت وغطى هيرش حرب أفغانستان إثر الهجمات الإرهابية بتاريخ 11 سبتمبر والدور المشين لحكومة بوش / تشيني وفضح القصص الواهية والمبررات لغزو العراق واحتلاله وكشف عن جرائم العسكر الأمريكيين التي تتعلق بالإغتيالات والتعذيب الوحشي في سجن أبوغريب.
