ينقسم الديوان إلى قسمين كبيرين القسم الأول شعر والثانى نثر، وهو عبارة عن هذه التعليقات التى وضعها جيته لكى يفهم الديوان، وهى خاصة بتاريخ الآداب العربية والفارسية والعبرانية ويتكون القسم الأول من اثنى عشر كتاب هى كتاب المغنى وكتاب حافظ وكتاب العشق وكتاب التفكير وسوء المزاج وكتاب الحكمة وكتاب تيمور وكتاب زليخا والساقى وكتاب الأمثال وكتاب البارسى وأخيرا كتاب الخلد وقد وضع جيته أسماء هذه الكتب باللغة الفارسية وتحتها ترجمتها الألمانية واللحن السائد فى هذا الديوان كله هو التحول، والديوان يشيد بطبيعة الإنسان وقواها ويحمل طابع التفاؤل والإقبال على الحياة ويدعو إلى المؤاخاة بين الأمم والشعوب.
