يعتبر كتاب البداية والنهاية من أهم المراجع التاريخية وقد ابتدأ فيه مصنفه من خلق السماوات والأرض وما فيهن إلى القرن الثامن الهجري معتمدا في الأحداث التي قبل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على الآيات والأحاديث والروايات المسندة الأخرى وأما ما بعد البعثة فهو يتكلم على كل سنة على حدة وما مر فيها من أمور وأحداث مهمة بشكل مشبع ومفصل وهذه طبعة منقحة وموثقة ومقارنة بمخطوطات أخرى ومخرجة الآيات وعليها حواش في شرح المبهمات والمصطلحات القديمة.
