يعد الكتاب من أوائل الكتب التي قام بتصنيفها العلامة محمد عبد العزيز مرزوق، والذي يعتبر أحد أهم المؤلفات التي صنفت في مجال النسيج الإسلامي بمصر في القرن العشرين. وكتب تصديرا له وقتها العلامة جاستون فييت الذي شغل منصب مدير دار الآثار العربية لحوالي خمسة وعشرين عاما، وله العديد من المصنفات المهمة في مجال الفنون الإسلامية. وقد تم إعادة طباعة هذا الكتاب على هامش المعرض الذي يقيمه قطاع الفنون التشكيلية تحت عنوان \"كنوز متاحفنا الفنية 2\"
