ينتقل القارئ في هذه الرواية التاريخية إلى عصر بائد، تختلف فيه العادات والتقاليد وأسباب الحروب ؛ حيث يسرد المؤلف، في إطار روائي، قصة أحد فرسان قبيلة \"تغلب\" العربية، وأحد أهم أبطال العصر الجاهلي، وهو \"عدي بن ربيعة\"، الملقب ﺑ \"المهلهل\" أو \"الزير\". وتدور الرواية حول \"حرب البسوس\"، التي قامت بين قبيلة \"تغلب\" وقبيلة \"بكر\" واستمرت قرابة الأربعين عاما ؛ فتبدأ أحداثها التي يشوبها الخيال، بأجواء هادئة قبل بداية الحرب وعقب مقتل \"كليب بن ربيعة التغلبي\"، وتستمر الأحداث في فصول الكتاب المتعاقبة بمزيد من التشويق حتى النهاية ؛ حيث وفاة البطل الذي اشتهر بقصائده الرنانة في الفخر والثأر.
