يألف الغزالي هذا الكتاب ليبين المسائل التي ليس الخلاف فيها بين العقيدة الإسلامية والفلسفة لفظيا بل ما يسبب بدعة أو كفرا، وقد ناقش عشرين مسألة مثل أزلية العالم وأبديته والاستدلال على وجود الله وعلمه سبحانه بجميع الجزئيات وخرق العادات وفناء النفوس البشرية وبعث الأجساد وغيرها واعتبر العلماء هذا الكتاب ضربة قاضية لاستكبار الفلاسفة وإدعائهم التوصل إلى الحقيقة في المسائل الغيبية بعقولهم، وهو تراث فلسفي عظيم فضلا عن أنه تراث بقلم حجة الإسلام الغزالي.
