في هذه الرواية يمنحنا سلمان رشدي مزيج محبب ومتنوع للتاريخ والفن واللغة والسياسة والدين وأحداث الرواية تدور في ظل خلفية التغيرات الكبيرة التي شهدتها جنوب إفريقيا بعد مرحلة الفصل العنصري وقد امتدح النقاد الرواية قائلين بأنها عمل سيتردد صداه في الذاكرة طويلا بعد الانتهاء من قراءته، وتدور رواية العار على السقوط المفاجئ لأستاذ جامعي من عليائه وفقدانه لوظيفته خزيا بسبب علاقته الشائنة بإحدى تلاميذه ونتيجة لحالة الإحباط التي أصيب بها هذا الأستاذ استقال من منصبه وذهب للعيش مع ابنته في جنوب إفريقيا وهناك هاجمهما ثلاثة رجال، أشعلوا فيه النيران ثم اغتصبوا ابننته.
