Doing Qualitative Research for Beginners
Aim: This article guides novice researchers in preparing a basic qualitative research proposal. It covers the underlying reasons for conducting qualitative research, key concepts, and the basic process flow in preparing a doable qualitative proposal: research problem, central research question, research questions, and corresponding interview questions. Methodology: Several key steps in preparing the proposal are explained and supported with tables or illustrations. Qualitative research was selected because, as Creswell and Poth (2018) and Tracy (2020) noted, it effectively examines complex social phenomena. Qualitative approaches capture the complexity and diversity of human experiences, especially when discussing complex motivations, beliefs, and processes that are difficult to measure. Findings: The paper focuses on important methodological considerations like research problem formulation, research questions, and interview question design, giving new researchers a basic understanding of how Creswell and Poth (2018) and Tracy (2020) noted to create a rigorous qualitative proposal. Conclusions: Rather than presenting an empirical study, this paper serves as a methodological guide, offering a structured framework for conducting qualitative research and ensuring methodological rigor in generating meaningful insights. Recommendations: It aims to equip early-stage researchers with the necessary skills to navigate qualitative inquiry effectively through interview-based approaches.
Islamic integrated education system model in the Malay archipelago: Implications for educational leadership
This paper discusses the practice of the Islamic Integrated Education System model in selected schools in the Malay Archipelago in the context of education in the 21st century. Islamic Integrated Schools provide an educational system that integrates academic knowledge and Islamic knowledge. Despite having a similar aim,these schools often have their own Islamic Integrated education system in place, which varies from school to school. An instrument derived from an earlier study conducted by this research team was utilised in the data collection process. The questionnaire focused on four constructs that describe a model of an Islamic Integrated school, that is, The School's Concept, The Integration of Islamic and Academic Knowledge, Teacher-Student Relationship, and The School's Islamic Climate. The sample consisted of 507 students from one Singaporean, two Indonesian, and three Malaysian Islamic Integrated Schools. Overall, the model suggests that the Integration of the Islamic and Academic Knowledge was the weakest contributing factor to the overall concept of the Islamic Integrated education system compared to Teacher-Student Relationship and the School's Islamic Climate. The findings indicate the need for the Islamic Integrated Schools to critically evaluate their existing implementation of knowledge integration to better prepare their students for the challenges of the 21st century.
Promoting English language development and the reading habit among students in rural schools through the Guided Extensive Reading program
This paper describes an extensive reading program conducted in three rural secondary or middle schools in Malaysia, aimed at motivating the students to read extensively in English and helping them overcome their problems in understanding English texts as a means towards increasing their proficiency in the language. The paper begins by discussing the rationale for extensive reading for students in rural schools, the aims and features of the reading program, the materials used, as well as the perceptions of students undergoing the program. The problems faced by the students in understanding texts written in English are particularly highlighted, and implications drawn for the successful implementation of extensive reading programs in rural schools.
Understanding Arabic-Speaking Skill Learning Strategies Among Selected Malay Learners: A Case-Study At The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)
In Malaysia, studies have shown that most Malay learners learning Arabic Language exhibit weak Arabic speaking skill despite spending years of learning the language. However, given the same learning environment and experience, some of them could be considered as good Arabic speakers as revealed by the results of Arabic Placement Test conducted by the Center of Languages and pre-Academic Development (CELPAD) of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). These learners have successfully scored band 7 and above in Arabic speaking skill test. The researchers believe that being aware of certain learning strategies in enhancing their speaking skills would help these learners to become good Arabic speakers. This assumption is based on several theories in language learning strategies which postulate that learners’ success in language learning or lack of it is attributable to the various strategies which different learners bring to tasks and not solely relying on environment per say. Therefore this study attempts to understand the assumption by investigating the Arabic speaking skill learning strategies of selected Malay good Arabic speakers and Malay poor Arabic speakers at the (IIUM) within and outside the parameters of the educational settings. In addition, the research also seeks to explore the students’ perception on Arabic speaking skill in terms of the importance of Arabic speaking skill for the Malay learners, the required level of Arabic speaking skill for the Malay learners and the prerequisites to become good Arabic speakers.
Reading comprehension processes and strategies in l1 and l2 in malaysian primary and secondary schools
This study is set in the context of the acknowledged debate, highlighted by the work of Lunzer and Gardner's Schools Council project (1979), concerning the theoretical issue of whether reading comprehension is a unitary competence or consists of identifiable discrete subskills. This long- standing polarised theoretical debate can be traced as far back as the sixties and seventies in the position taken by reading experts such as Spache and Spache (1969), Davis (1971) and Thorndike (1973). Spache and Spache and Thorndike concluded that reading comprehension was a unitary competence, not consisting of separate skills that can be practised in isolation. On the other hand, Davis viewed reading comprehension as composed of separate identifiable skills and abilities. The polarised arguments pose a question as to the nature of reading comprehension. Is there such a thing as discrete reading comprehension sub-skills that can be built up hierarchically and can promote the understanding of texts? With the question in mind this study set out to test whether reading comprehension is a unitary competence of sub-skills or one that can be broken down into separate sub-skills. The research involved the rigorous testing of a series of reading comprehension tests in two languages using four texts taken from the work of Lunzer and Gardner (1979). The texts were modified to suit the socio-cultural context of the students. All of the chosen texts were translated into Bahasa (L1) which is the mother-tongue of the students. In principle, the focus of the study in Part I is centred on replicating the work of Lunzer and Gardner (1979) in some selected Malaysian primary and secondary schools. It seeks to understand whether the main hypothesis holds that reading comprehension is unitary in nature and cannot be broken down into a number of distinct subskills. A selected 300 primary school pupils aged 12 were required to read and answer four comprehension tests written in L1. Another selected 150 secondary school students aged 15 were required to perform the same tasks on material written in L2. Each test has about 30 comprehension questions which are divided into eight categories of subskills. The two groups produced a total of 1,636 valid comprehension tests which were marked rigorously. Factor analysing the data yielded a number of important findings concerning whether reading comprehension subskills are unitary or hierarchic in nature. These findings may suggest some recommendations for improving reading for learning across the Malaysian primary and secondary schools curriculum. In Part I the outlined five chapters discuss the background information which led to the testing of the 450 students, the related literature review, the chosen research design and analysis, the findings and the research implications for the Part II study. The study reported in Part II is an extension of the work done in Part I, in that the remaining five chapters explore the justification of conducting the indepth interviews, the review of the related literature, the design of the interview, the findings and the educational implications of the study. This part explores the reading comprehension strategies that were used by the students in answering the comprehension questions. The second study was successfully made during the summer of 1994. A total of 16 students aged 15 were selected from several secondary schools in Johor Bahru, the capital state of Johor, Malaysia … … The thesis ends with a discussion of the implications from both studies especially for the reading curriculum, instruction, pedagogy, classroom practice and future research.
Challenges and Opportunities of Biocoagulant/Bioflocculant Application for Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment and Its Potential for Sludge Recovery
The utilization of metal-based conventional coagulants/flocculants to remove suspended solids from drinking water and wastewater is currently leading to new concerns. Alarming issues related to the prolonged effects on human health and further pollution to aquatic environments from the generated nonbiodegradable sludge are becoming trending topics. The utilization of biocoagulants/bioflocculants does not produce chemical residue in the effluent and creates nonharmful, biodegradable sludge. The conventional coagulation–flocculation processes in drinking water and wastewater treatment, including the health and environmental issues related to the utilization of metal-based coagulants/flocculants during the processes, are discussed in this paper. As a counterpoint, the development of biocoagulants/bioflocculants for drinking water and wastewater treatment is intensively reviewed. The characterization, origin, potential sources, and application of this green technology are critically reviewed. This review paper also provides a thorough discussion on the challenges and opportunities regarding the further utilization and application of biocoagulants/bioflocculants in water and wastewater treatment, including the importance of the selection of raw materials, the simplification of extraction processes, the application to different water and wastewater characteristics, the scaling up of this technology to a real industrial scale, and also the potential for sludge recovery by utilizing biocoagulants/bioflocculants in water/wastewater treatment.
Microbial degradation of microplastics by enzymatic processes: a review
Microplastics contamination is becoming a major concern worldwide. More than 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea animals have died due to plastic contamination. In addition, plastic particles have been found in juvenile turtles. Statistical data on plastic pollution indicate that this is a serious issue. Due to their small size, microplastics have a large surface area and have more ability to absorb into biological cells. The hydrophobic surface of microplastics attracts co-contaminants such as heavy metals, pharmaceutical toxicants, flame retardants, and other plasticizers, which can then enter biological organisms. Microplastics are usually recalcitrant in the environment, causing microplastics to be transported along the food chain, with humans as the final consumer. Research has been conducted to evaluate the best way to treat and remediate microplastic pollution. Research on microplastic degradation is focused on biological and non-biological approaches. To date, microorganisms such as algae, fungi, and bacteria have attracted the attention of scientists as a tool for microplastic treatment. The degradation of microplastics is closely related to the enzymatic reactions produced by the microorganisms. Here we review microplastics degradation through enzymes from the microorganism’s perspective. We present the enzymes that have been isolated from microorganisms for specific microplastics; the mechanisms of microplastics degradation by various enzymes; and the types of microplastics for which degradation mechanisms remain unclear.
Potential of local plant leaves as natural coagulant for turbidity removal
The performance of local plants was tested using synthetic turbid water resembling real wastewater by measuring their ability to remove turbidity. The selected plants were A. indica , S. palustris , D. linearis , S. polyanthum , M. esculenta , P. sarmentosum , and M. malabathricum which can easily be found locally. The experiment was run based on coagulant dosages varied from 0 to 10 g/L for each plant with a rapid mixing speed at 180 rpm for 3 min, slow mixing speed at 10 rpm for 20 min, and settling time for 30 min. The results demonstrated that each plant has been capable of reducing turbidity by different amounts, with an increase in the coagulant dosage. The optimum coagulant dosages achieved for A. indica , S. palustris , S. polyanthum , and D. linearis were 10 g/L with turbidity removal at 26.9%, 24.9%, 24.9%, and 17.5%, respectively. P. sarmentosum and M. esculenta attained optimum coagulant dosages at 5 g/L with turbidity removal at 24.2% and 22.2%, and lastly M. malabathricum at 0.1 g/L (12.2%). P. sarmentosum was suggested to the best natural coagulant which achieved the highest removal of turbidity with a low dosage used.
Microplastic Removal in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) by Natural Coagulation: A Literature Review
Urban industrialization has caused a ubiquity of microplastics in the environment. A large percentage of plastic waste originated from Southeast Asian countries. Microplastics arising from the primary sources of personal care items and industrial uses and the fragmentation of larger plastics have recently garnered attention due to their ubiquity. Due to the rising level of plastic waste in the environment, the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of plastics threaten aquatic and human life. Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents are one of the major sources of these plastic fragments. WWTPs in Southeast Asia contribute largely to microplastic pollution in the marine environment, and thus, further technological improvements are required to ensure the complete and efficient removal of microplastics. Coagulation is a significant process in removing microplastics, and natural coagulants are far superior to their chemical equivalents due to their non-toxicity and cost-effectiveness. A focused literature search was conducted on journal repository platforms, mainly ScienceDirect and Elsevier, and on scientific databases such as Google Scholar using the keywords Wastewater Treatment Plant, Coagulation, Microplastics, Marine Environment and Southeast Asia. The contents and results of numerous papers and research articles were reviewed, and the relevant papers were selected. The relevant findings and research data are summarized in this paper. The paper reviews (1) natural coagulants for microplastic removal and their effectiveness in removing microplastics and (2) the potential use of natural coagulants in Southeast Asian wastewater treatment plants as the abundance of natural materials readily available in the region makes it a feasible option for microplastic removal.
