TYPOGRAPHY: GETTING MORE FROM THE GRID
As a student of design, the author didn't have much time for grids. He perceived them as being restrictive and counter to the aspirations of an emerging designer. As a practising designer, however, he quickly learned the benefits they offer and the hidden beauty they can contain. Since the fourteenth century, the basis of the grid has changed little. Early religious texts contain text set in vertical columns, punctuated by images and embellished with drop capitals and marginalia (additional text annotations) - much like modern-day publications, and indeed this magazine. A grid can be used on a single design, for example a poster, or over a series of pages such as in a book or brochure. In practice, grids offer designers an underpinning structure to their work, essentially taking the guesswork out of design. Arguably, the best design work occurs when there is a certain amount of tension between control and freedom.
Design research : investigation for successful creative solutions
Design research will guide the reader through the early stages of a design project, identifying appropriate research techniques and enabling innovative solutions to be found.
Got away perfectly
Our main challengers for the championship, Mark Skaife and Greg Murphy, had bad weekends. That's great for us because, with the points system the way it is, it makes it harder for them to catch us. We've been in similar positions and Mark has been in similar positions before as well. It was less than a decade ago he was having a tough time in touring car racing in the Fred Gibson days. I'm sure he's in an aggressive frame of mind to turn it around and that's what you need to do. Generally I would say the dangers are Skaife, Murphy, Jason Bright and Russell Ingall.
Development, Validation and Application of an ICP-SFMS Method for the Determination of Metals in Protein Powder Samples, Sourced in Ireland, with Risk Assessment for Irish Consumers
A method has been developed, optimised and validated to analyse protein powder supplements on an inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometer (ICP-SFMS), with reference to ICH Guideline Q2 Validation of Analytical Procedures: Text and Methodology. This method was used in the assessment of twenty-one (n = 21) elements (Al, Au, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Pb, Pt, Sn, Ti, Tl, V) to evaluate the safety of thirty-six (n = 36) protein powder samples that were commercially available in the Irish marketplace in 2016/2017. Using the determined concentrations of elements in samples (µg·kg−1), a human health risk assessment was carried out to evaluate the potential carcinogenic and other risks to consumers of these products. While the concentrations of potentially toxic elements were found to be at acceptable levels, the results suggest that excessive and prolonged use of some of these products may place consumers at a slightly elevated risk for developing cancer or other negative health impacts throughout their lifetimes. Thus, the excessive use of these products is to be cautioned, and consumers are encouraged to follow manufacturer serving recommendations.
The layout book
\"A fascinating exploration of this fundamental aspect of graphic design, The Layout Book explains the hows, whys and why-nots of the placing of elements on a page or screen layout. A historical overview of the subject is followed by a systematic look at key theoretical principles and practical applications.Offering a huge array of potential layout options and with over 250 colour illustrations from some of the world's leading design studios, this is a uniquely inspiring guide to graphic design. The second edition has also been updated to include interviews with practising designers, as well as new study points to aid readers in their own explorations.Invaluable for design students looking for a better understanding of layout design, and inspiring for working designers, The Layout Book proves itself as a graphic design must-have\"-- Provided by publisher.
Format for graphic designers
From traditional print to digital formats for mobile phones and tablets, this book provides a clear introduction to the creative use of format in graphic design. Using 200 inspirational examples from contemporary international designers, Format for Graphic Designers guides the student through the role of format in both the purpose and the narrative of a design. The authors look at the physical aspects of formats - traditional and experimental, print and digital - to explore innovative solutions and, through case studies, explore how and why professional designers choose particular formats for a job. Covering everything from books and magazines, point-of-purchase displays, packaging, direct mail, brochures, and screen-based formats, the new edition illuminates this critical element of design practice for students, and provides them with a solid foundation on which to build their own designs.
AZD1222-induced neutralising antibody activity against SARS-CoV-2 Delta VOC
Two doses of AZD1222 generated NAb activity against the Wildtype strain bearing a spike identical to that encoded by the vaccine in all participants (median NAbT IC50=419), with a 2·1–fold (95% CI 2·0–2·2) reduction in median NAbT relative to two doses of BNT162b2 (appendix p 2). [...]median NAbTs against all SARS-CoV-2 variants were further reduced relative to BNT162b2: 2·4-fold (95% CI 2·3–2·6) against D614G, 2·4-fold against B.1.1.7 (2·2–2·5), 2·5-fold (1·3–2·8) against B.1.351, and 2·5-fold (1·4–2·7) against B.1.617.2. After a single AZD1222 dose, participants with prior COVID-19 symptoms (16 [32%] of 50) had significantly higher NAbTs against all strains than those without prior COVID symptoms (5·1 × 10−5 ≤3·1 × 10−4). Since many responses fell outside of the quantitative limit of detection, stratification of NAbTs was again informative. Prevention of infection, however, appears to require substantially higher NAbTs than prevention of the most severe COVID-19 disease and death. [...]although reduced in-vitro neutralisation of VOCs predicts reduced AZD1222 vaccine efficacy against symptomatic infection with the same VOCs, close monitoring of the unfolding pandemic will reveal the extent to which the link with severe or fatal COVID-19 has been broken by all current vaccines.
