In this experiment, we aimed to fabricate SWCNT conjugated with tamoxifen and evaluated its anticancer potential against human breast cancer cells (MCF-7). The results showed that SWCNT was synthetized successfully using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The results of Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM analyses confirmed the synthesis of highly pure SWCNT. The functionalization of SWCNT was performed by oxidizing of SWCNT, attachment of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to oxidized SWCNT, and attachment of azelaic acid to the polyethylene glycol group. As a result, the SWCNT with free functional carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups (SWCNT-PEG) was developed. The SWCNT-PEG was then conjugated with tamoxifen (SWCNT-PEG-TAM). The FT-IR together with NMR results confirmed the conjugation of tamoxifen to functionalized SWCNT (SWCNT-PEG-TAM). The cytotoxic concentrations (CC50) of SWCNT-PEG, tamoxifen, and SWCNT-PEG-TAM were >100, 12.67±2.69, and 5.49±1.34μg/ml, respectively. Linking tamoxifen to functionalized SWCNT enhanced the cytotoxic action of tamoxifen against breast cancer cells up to 2.3 times. The results of the morphological examination and caspase-3 activity confirmed the higher cytotoxic action of SWCNT-PEG-TAM as compared to free tamoxifen. The results obtained in this study indicated that this delivery system enhanced the therapeutic effects and anticancer potential of tamoxifen against human breast cancer cells.

The effect of milling time on the morphology, microstructure, physical and mechanical properties of pure Al-5 wt % Al2O3 (Al-5Al2O3) has been investigated. Al-5Al2O3 nanocomposites were fabricated using ball milling in a powder metallurgy route. The increase in the milling time resulted in the homogenous dispersion of 5 wt % Al2O3 nanoparticles, the reduction of particle clustering, and the reduction of distances between the composite particles. The significant grain refining during milling was revealed which showed as a reduction of particle size resulting from longer milling time. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the nanocomposite powders also showed that designated ball milling contributes to the crystalline refining and accumulation of internal stress due to induced severe plastic deformation of the particles. It can be argued that these morphological and microstructural variations of nanocomposite powders induced by designated ball milling time was found to contribute to an improvement in the density, densification, micro-hardness (HV), nano-hardness (HN), and Young’s modulus (E) of Al-5Al2O3 nanocomposites. HV, HN, and E values of nanocomposites were increased by ~48%, 46%, and 40%, after 12 h of milling, respectively.

This study focuses on the physical and microstructural properties of mullite-based ceramic synthesized by solid-state reaction of rice husk ash (RHA) and alumina (Al2O3). Laser Flash analysis (LFA), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) characterized the effects of the mixtures of RHA and Al2O3 matrix. The results show that the Al2O3rich samples sintered at 1500 °C exhibit the highest thermal diffusivity radiated at 500 °Cwith values varied from 0.258-0.369 mm2/s. The addition of Al2O3 (30-60 wt.%) into RHA enhance the crystallization of mullite on the surface of vitreous particles. The presence of diphasic mullite densified the green bodies, and its crystallites size keep increases (400.78-650.52 nm) by theincrement of the sintering temperature (1200-1500 °C). These results suggested that addition of Al2O3into RHA enhance the thermal diffusivity as the values closer to the thermal diffusivity of pure mullite and have high potential application as thermal insulation material. The properties of mullite-based ceramics listed above such samples M1, where the composition closes to mullite (3:2) have comparable properties to commercialize mullite ceramics.

Very narrow and pure silver nanoparticles were synthesized by modified thermal treatment method via oxygen and nitrogen flow in succession. The structural and optical properties of the calcined silver nanoparticles at 600°C with diverse Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentrations varied from 2% to 4% were studied by means of different techniques. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor the production of pure Ag nanoparticles at a given Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentration. The X-ray powder diffraction spectra are evidence for the transformation of the amorphous sample at 30°C to the cubic crystalline nanostructures at the calcination temperatures for all Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentrations. The transmission electron microscopy images showed the creation of spherical silver nanoparticles with the average particle size decreased by increasing Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentrations from 4.61 nm at 2% to 2.49 nm at 4% Poly(vinylpyrrolidone). The optical properties were investigated by means of UV-vis absorption spectrophotometer, which showed an increase in the conduction band of Ag nanoparticles with increasing Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) concentrations from 2.83 eV at 2% Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) to 2.94 eV at 4% Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) due to decreasing particle size. This was due to less attraction between conduction electrons and metal ions for smaller particle size corresponding to fewer atoms that made up the metal nanoparticles.

nanoparticles were synthesized via high energy ball milling with subsequent sintering while carbon black was commercially purchased. The materials were later incorporated into epoxy resin to fabricate double-layer composite structures with total thicknesses of 2 and 3 mm. The CB1/F1, in which carbon black as matching and ferrite as absorbing layer with each thickness of 1 mm, showed the highest microwave absorption of more than 99.9%, with minimum reflection loss of −33.8 dB but with an absorption bandwidth of only 2.7 GHz. Double layer absorbers with F1/CB1(ferrite as matching and carbon black as absorbing layer with each thickness of 1 mm) structure showed the best microwave absorption performance in which more than 99% microwave energy were absorbed, with promising minimum reflection loss of −24.0 dB, along with a wider bandwidth of 4.8 GHz and yet with a reduced thickness of only 2 mm.

A porous ceramic is made from composite materials which consist of alumina and commercial rice husk ash. This type of ceramics is obtained by mixing the commercial rice husk ash as a source of silica (SiO2) and a pore forming agent with alumina (Al2O3) powder. To obtain this type of ceramic, a solid-state technique is used with sintering at high temperature. This study also investigated the effects of the rice husk ash ratios on the mechanical properties, porosity, and microstructure. The results showed that, by increasing the content of the rice husk ash from 10 to 50 wt%, there is an increase in the porosity from 42.92% to 49.04%, while the mechanical properties decreased initially followed by an increase at 30 wt% and 50 wt%; the hardness at 20 wt% of the ash content was recorded at 101.90 HV1. When the ash content was increased to 30 wt% and 50 wt%, the hardness was raised to 150.92 HV1 and 158.93 HV1, respectively. The findings also revealed that the tensile and compressive strengths experienced a decrease at 10 wt% of the ash content and after that increase at 30 wt% and 50 wt% of rice husk ash. XRD analysis found multiple phases of ceramic formation after sintering for the different rice husk ash content.

This paper presents a study of crystallographic evolution of disposed ark clam shell (ACS) after calcination at 400–1400°C which was kept at room temperature under ambient condition in Malaysia during nine months. A better understanding of hydration and recarbonation of ACS powder (≤63 μm) after calcination was discovered by PXRD and FTIR. The research focuses on the crystallographic transformation, biogenic calcite decomposition, and unusual atmospheric aragonite formation in ACS after calcination and atmospheric air exposure. Ex situ PXRD showed calcite present in ACS at ≤900°C. ACS transformed to pyrogenic fcc CaO at ≥800°C after three months. Long term atmospheric air exposure of decarbonized ACS caused nucleation of nonbiogenic aragonite, vaterite, calcite, and portlandite. However, in situ PXRD analysis of ACS at instantaneous temperature without cooling process does not indicate the presence of aragonite, vaterite, and portlandite crystals. FTIR spectra revealed CaO–CO2 bond in ACS dissociated with temperature (600–900°C) to form CaO and CO2. Ca–OH bond was also traced in FTIR spectra of ≥700°C. It resulted by hydroadsorption of CaO with H2O in atmospheric air.

Characterization and Evaluation of Materials
2015
The characterization and optimization of the microstructures of materials pertaining to material properties is a primitive necessity to ensure the performance and service life of the materials and components. In the demand of new characterization and evaluation techniques, nondestructive ultrasonic techniques have shown a good potential to characterize the microstructures and mechanical properties of a wide variety of materials. Measurements of ultrasonic parameters such as velocity and attenuation can provide information on the structural and microstructural variations of those materials that have undergone the heat-treatment procedure. In the current review, the correlation of ultrasonic parameters with microstructural features of ferrous and nonferrous metals such as steels, aluminum, and superalloys is investigated. It is proven that ultrasonic parameters are closely correlated to the microstructural evolutions which frequently occur during the heat-treatment procedures in practical situations. To conclude, the ultrasonic measurements contribute to a feasible and accurate characterization of the materials and evaluation of their microstructures and mechanical properties in a straightforward, reliable, and fast, nondestructive manner for practical applications.

The alumino-silicate-fluoride (ASF) bioglass system with empirical formula [(45-x)SiO2-xCaF2-20P2O5-20Al2O3-15CaO] where x = 5, 10, 15, and 20 (wt.%) has been synthesised by using conventional melt-quenching method. In this study, soda lime silica (SLS) glass and clam shell (CS) vitreous waste were utilized as a source of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and calcium oxide (CaO), respectively. The different physical behaviors of ASF bioglass were closely related to the CaF2 content in each composition. The structural analysis shows the presence of various chemical bonds showing the formation of ASF bioglass. The ASF bioglass has many applications in dental field and efforts to improve its formulation can promise a better future in medical procedures.

2019
This research involved comprehensive studies on thermal, physical, and morphological properties of SiO2-Na2O-CaO-P2O5 (SNCP) glass-ceramic at various sintering temperatures. The study in SNCP glass-ceramic using soda-lime-silica (SLS) wastes glass and clam shell (CS) wastes as the main raw of materials via conventional melt-quenching technique and solid state sintering are interesting and challenging by considering the research using waste materials to fabricate novel SNCP glass-ceramic. The main peaks, Na3PO4 and Ca3Na6Si6O18 were assigned to high crystallization temperature (Tc) at 650-950?C. The density of samples increases at 550-750?C and decreases at 850-950?C due to the increase of sample thickness and higher specific volume at high sintering temperature. FESEM micrograph showed that existed porous increased at sintering temperature 850-950?C contributes effect to low densification of the sample. nema
