Infectious bursal disease is a highly contagious disease of young chickens caused by the infectious bursal disease virus. This disease poses an important threat to the commercial poultry industry globally. This study was designed to develop an In-House Indirect Enzyme-Linked Immune Sorbent Assay Kit for the serological detection of antibodies against infectious bursal disease viruses. An infectious bursal disease virus antigen dilution (1:2), sample serum (1:500), and mouse anti-chicken immunoglobulin G (IgG) labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) (1:2,000) were used in this assay. The calculated cutoff value was 0.24. This in-house indirect ELISA method was compared with a commercial ELISA kit for the detection of antibodies against infectious bursal disease virus in chickens. The performance of the newly developed and commercial ELISA kit was evaluated as described by Samad et al. (1994). The sensitivity and specificity of the current ELISA method were 98% (95% CI: 92.96–99.76) and 97% (95% CI: 91.48–99.38), respectively. The average intra-assay % CV of the triplet of 2 samples was 7.6, and interassay comparisons indicated a CV of 5.45%. As indicated by the results, we described a valuable and cost-effective, sensitive and specific in-house indirect ELISA kit for the serological diagnosis of infectious bursal disease in Ethiopia.

Combined Adjuvant Formulations Enhanced an Immune Response of Trivalent Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccine in Cattle

Foot-and-mouth disease is globally one of the most economically important viral diseases of cloven-hoofed animals that can be controlled by different strategies, where vaccination plays an important role. Selection of adjuvant added to vaccine preparation is crucial in ensuring the protective effect of the vaccine. Aluminum hydroxide gel mixed with saponin (AS) is widely used adjuvant, with its suboptimal immune response in FMD vaccine. The present study was undertaken to evaluate different ingredients of adjuvants for inactivated trivalent (A, O and SAT 2) FMD vaccine and to demonstrate the effect of booster dose in cattle.
Cattle were grouped into five; four experimental and one control, with six animals in each group and immunized with trivalent vaccine with various formulations of adjuvants. Immune response was measured using Solid Phase Competitive Enzyme Linked Immune Sorbent Assay (SPCE).
The antibody level in cattle immunised with a vaccine formulation containing a mixture of aluminum hydroxide gel and saponin (AS) were significantly lower than AS boosted group for the three serotypes (p<0.05,
-test), which directs the need for booster dose. Whereas the antibody response in the AS + oil group was higher followed by oil alone. The AS preparation with a booster dose has shown better immune response compared to the group without.
The findings of this study could suggest that oil based and AS with oil could replace the conventional aluminum hydroxide gel and saponin adjuvants in FMD vaccine preparations. Challenge test was not successful indicating the need for further research on the virus infectivity.

Joint modeling of longitudinal changes of pulse rate and body temperature with time to recovery of pneumonia patients under treatment: a prospective cohort study

Background
Pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of mortality worldwide and one of the most common lower respiratory tract infections that is contributing significantly to the burden of antibiotic consumption. The study aims to identify the determinants of the progress of pulse rate, body temperature and time to recovery of pneumonia patients.
Method
A prospective cohort study design was used from Felege Hiwot referral hospital on 214 sampled pneumonia patients from March 01, 2022 up to May 31, 2022. The Kaplan–Meier survival estimate and Log-Rank test was used to compare the survival time. Joint model of bivariate longitudinal and time to event model was used to identify factors of longitudinal change of pulse rate and body temperature with time to recovery jointly.
Result
As the follow up time of pneumonia patient’s increase by one hour the average longitudinal change of pulse rate and body temperature were decreased by 0.4236 bpm and 0.0119

. The average longitudinal change of pulse rate and body temperature of patients who lived in rural was 1.4602 bpm and 0.1550
C

times less as compared to urban residence. Patients who had dangerous signs are significantly increased the average longitudinal change of pulse rate and body temperature by 2.042 bpm and 0.6031

as compared to patients who had no dangerous signs. A patient from rural residence was 1.1336 times more likely to experience the event of recovery as compared to urban residence. The estimated values of the association parameter for pulse rate and body temperature were -0.4236 bpm and -0.0119 respectively, which means pulse rate and body temperature were negatively related with patients recovery time.
Conclusion
Pulse rate and body temperature significantly affect the time to the first recovery of pneumonia patients who are receiving treatment. Age, residence, danger sign, comorbidity, baseline symptom and visiting time were the joint determinant factors for the longitudinal change of pulse rate, body temperature and time to recovery of pneumonia patients. The joint model approach provides precise dynamic predictions, widespread information about the disease transitions, and better knowledge of disease etiology.

The coexistence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension is a worldwide public health problem causing significant morbidity, mortality, and decreased quality of life. Despite the increasing burden of hypertension among patients with DM, data on determinants of hypertension among patients with DM in the Amhara region of Ethiopia is scarce. Hence, this study identified determinants of hypertension among people with diabetes attending chronic disease follow-up clinics in the Amhara region of comprehensive specialized hospitals in Ethiopia.
An institutional-based unmatched case-control study was conducted among 470 individuals with diabetes in the Amhara region's comprehensive specialized hospitals (Debre Berhan, Felege Hiwot, and Dessie Comprehensive specialized hospital). A multistage sampling technique was used to select participants for this study. We collected the data using standard questionnaires (short form of international physical activity questionnaire, Morisky medication adherence scale, patient health questionnaire, perceived dietary adherence scale, Oslo social support questionnaire, and alcohol use disorder identification test), physical measurements, and data extraction checklists. A multivariable binary logistic regression was fitted to identify determinants of hypertension, and we presented the findings using an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI).
235 cases and 235 controls participated in this study. The median (IQR) age for the cases was 60 (52-66 = 14), and the mean age (± SD) for the controls was 51.72 (± 12.51). The significant determinants of hypertension with AOR [95% CI] were a lower level of physical activity: 1.82 [1.00, 3.31], depression: 2.00 [1.24, 3.21], family history of hypertension: 2.13 [1.34, 3.37], not having diabetic health education: 1.87 [1.18, 2.96], a longer duration of diabetes: 1.99 [1.05, 3.79], and poor glycemic control: 1.57 [1.01, 2.45].
In this study, determinants that increase the risk of hypertension among people with diabetes mellitus were older age, physical inactivity, depression, family history of hypertension, not having diabetic health education, a longer duration of diabetes, and poor glycemic control.

Seroprevalence of viral hepatitis B and C infections among healthcare workers in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at higher risk of contracting hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. Currently, there is no estimate of pooled data on the prevalence of HBV and HCV infections among HCWs in the country. Thus, this review aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of hepatitis B and C infections among HCWs in Ethiopia.
A comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Hinari, and African Journals Online to identify pertinent articles from the inception to April 2024. The protocol has been registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; CRD42024527940) and conducted per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Data were extracted independently by two authors and analyzed using STATA version 11 software. A random-effect model and Egger's test were computed to estimate the pooled prevalence and assess publication bias, respectively.
A total of 18 studies involving4,948 healthcare workers were included in this review to estimate the pooled prevalence of HBV and HCV infections among HCWs in Ethiopia. The overall prevalence of HBV was 5.93% (95% CI; 3.22-8.63). The sub-group analysis showed that the prevalence of HBV among medical waste handlers and health professionals was8.6% (95% CI; 3.01-14.13) and 4.98% (95% CI; 1.85-8.11), respectively. The combined prevalence of HCV was 1.12% (95% CI; -4.19-6.43). In the sub-group analysis, the prevalence of HCV among medical waste handlers and health professionals was1.44% (95% CI; -5.28-8.18) and 0.59% (95% CI; -8.09-9.27), respectively.
In this review, we found a higher (5.93%) and moderate (1.12%) prevalence of HBV and HCV infections, respectively among Ethiopian HCWs. Therefore, to reduce the infectious burden of HBV and HCV among HCWs; there is a need to strict adherence to infection prevention and control measures. In addition, adequate HBV vaccination coverage for HCWs is mandatory to reduce the burden of HBV infection in the country.

Community pharmacies play a key role in the health care system by providing medication-related services for patients. The ability of pharmacist to provide patients with quality care is influenced by the kindness and contentment that come from a healthy work-life balance. This study is the first of its kind to comprehensively assess the quality of work life (QWL) and its associated factors among community pharmacists in the Northwest Amhara region of Ethiopia. The purpose of this study is to improve the working conditions and well-being of community pharmacists, which are crucial for the preservation of a competent and motivated healthcare workforce. A multicentered cross-sectional study utilized simple random sampling on community pharmacist at least one year of experience. Ordinary logistic regression employed to identify factors affecting QWL and data analyzed using using SPSS version 27, presented with AOR and 95% confidence intervals. Only 24.7% of community pharmacists reported good QWL, significantly associated with holding a diploma and working 38–58 h per week (AOR = 7.692 and 3.213, respectively). Conversely, 39.9% experienced poor QWL, related to being part-time employees (AOR = 0.137), working alone daily (AOR = 0.137), and earning lower monthly incomes (AORs = 0.032 for 3500–4500 birr and 0.096 for 4501–5500 birr). Improving community pharmacists’ wellbeing means improved patients care. For the mutual benefit of pharmacists and the general public, stakeholders should concentrate on balanced workloads, and support networks in order to enhance QWL.

Evaluation of In Vivo Wound-Healing and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Solvent Fractions of Fruits of Argemone mexicana L. (Papaveraceae)

Introduction. The solvent fractions of the fruits of Argemone mexicana L. (Papaveraceae) have not yet been explored scientifically for in vivo wound healing and anti-inflammatory activities. The objective of this study was, therefore, to evaluate in vivo wound healing and anti-inflammatory activities of the solvent fractions of the fruit of Argemone mexicana L. (Papaveraceae) in rats. Method. The crude extract of Argemone mexicana was fractionated with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and distilled water. Wound healing activity was evaluated using excision and incision wound models while anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using carrageenan-induced rat paw and cotton pellet-induced granuloma models. The fractions were evaluated at 5 and 10% ointments using moist-exposed burn ointment as the standard drug, and 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg test doses using aspirin, and dexamethasone as standard drugs for wound healing and anti-inflammatory activities, respectively. All treatment administrations were made orally for anti-inflammatory activity and applied topically for wound healing activity. Result. The 10% w/w ethyl acetate fraction ointment showed a significant percentage of wound contraction, reduced period of epithelialization, increased amount of fibrosis, neovascularization, and collagen tissue formation (p<0.01). The ethyl acetate fraction also showed a significant increase in tensile strength (55%; p<0.01) and (81.10%; p<0.01) at the tested doses of 5 and 10% w/w ointments, which was comparable to moist-exposed burn ointment. The ethyl acetate fraction also revealed a significant percent edema inhibition (61.41%; p<0.01), suppression of the exudate (38.09% p<0.01), and granuloma mass formations (53.47% p<0.01) at the tested dose of 400 mg/kg. Conclusion. The results of this study showed that the Ethyl acetate fraction of Argemone mexicana fruit has significant wound healing and anti-inflammatory activities which support the traditional claims of the experimental plant.

Introduction. One of the major public health issues across the whole world these days is teenage pregnancy which is defined as being pregnant in the age ranging from 13–19 years. About 11% of all births which occurred worldwide accounted for girls aged 15 to 19 years. From these, 95% teenage deliveries occur in low- and middle-income countries. World health 2014 statistics show that complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the second cause of death for 15–19-year-old girls globally. The aim of this study was to determine adverse obstetrical and perinatal outcomes of teenage pregnancy among deliveries at Lemlem Karl General Hospital, Tigray, Ethiopia, 2018. Result. This study result showed that 17.5% of the teenagers and 6.8% of the adults deliver low birth weight neonates. From the total teenage mothers, about thirty-five (11.3%) of them had developed pregnancy-induced hypertension, whereas about thirteen (4.2%) of adults develop pregnancy-induced hypertension. Regarding cesarean delivery, forty (12.9%) of those teenage mothers deliver by a cesarean section while 58 (18%) of the adult mothers deliver by cesarean delivery. Teenage pregnancy was significantly associated with adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes, a cesarean delivery (AOR: 0.57; 95% CI, 0.36–0.90), episiotomy (AOR: 2.01; 95% CI, 1.25–3.39), and low birth weight (AOR: 2.22; 95% CI, 1.13–4.36), and premature delivery were 2.87 (1.49–5.52). This study shows that adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes were significantly associated with teenagers than adult mothers. Therefore, giving health education on focused ANC is very important to bring change to the teenager at this study area.

Structural and thermal properties of pure and chromium doped zinc oxide nanoparticles

Pure ZnO and Cr-doped ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized via a facile chemical co-precipitation route and their structural, thermal characteristics were discussed systematically. In the experimental producer, the doping concentration has varied the range, 0.05–0.1 M, while calcined at 600 °C. The influence of Cr-doping on the physical characteristics of ZnO nanoparticles was investigated and addressed. As-prepared samples were analyzed via XRD, FTIR, TGA/DTA, BET, and ICP-MS. XRD analysis shows that ZnO and Cr doped ZnO nanoparticles with average particle sizes between 23 and 39 nm were successfully developed with hexagonal wurtzite structure. The FTIR spectroscopy analysis confirms the existence of chromium in the doped ZnO nanoparticles and the formation of ZnO. The TGA/DTA analysis shows that Cr–ZnO nanoparticles are more thermally stable than ZnO nanoparticles. Moreover, the dopant concentration has been analyzed via ICP-MS and showed a good agreement with the expected chromium concentration. The BET surface area measurement shows that 176.25 m
2
/g and 287.17 m
2
/g for un-doped ZnO, and 0.1 M Cr-doped ZnO nanoparticles, respectively. Hence, doping of Cr enhances the surface area and thermal stability. Thus, Cr–ZnO nanoparticles show good thermal stability, and high surface area, which is an excellent characteristices of nanomaterials.

Effectiveness of Polyacrylamide in Reducing Runoff and Soil Loss under Consecutive Rainfall Storms

The use of anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) as a soil conditioner could help prevent soil loss by water. In this study, we determined the effective granular PAM rate that best reduces runoff and soil loss from Oxisols. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the selected PAM rate was tested by applying it in a mixture with gypsum (G) or lime (L). The study was conducted in two phases: (i) Dry PAM rates of 0 (C), 20 kg ha−1 (P20), 40 kg ha−1 (P40), and 60 kg ha−1 (P60) were applied onto soil surface and run for six consecutive rainfall storms of 70 mm h−1 intensity for 1 h duration, and the effective PAM rate was selected; and (ii) G (4 t ha−1) or L (2 t ha−1) were applied alone or mixed with the selected PAM rate. The P20 was found to be effective in reducing runoff in the beginning while P40 and P60 were more effective starting from the third storm through the end of the consecutive storms, but with no statistically significant difference between P40 and P60. Hence, P40 was selected as the most suitable rate for the given test soil and rainfall pattern. On the other hand, the mixed application of P40 with G or L increased infiltration rate (IR) in the first two storms through improving soil solution viscosity. However, effectiveness of the mixtures had diminished by various degrees as rain progressed, as compared to P40 alone, which could be attributed to the rate and properties of G and L. In conclusion, the variation in effectiveness of PAM rates in reducing runoff with storm duration could indicate that the effective rates shall be selected based on the climatic region in that lower rates for the short rains or higher rates for elongated rains. Moreover, combined application of PAM with L could offer a good option to both fairly reduce soil erosion and improve land productivity especially in acidic soils like Oxisols, which requires further field verification.
