Helpless Imperialists: Imperial Failure, Fear and Radicalization
Maurus REINKOWSKI - Gregor THUM (eds.) Helpless Imperialists: Imperial Failure, Fear and Radicalization Göttingen-Bristol (CT), Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht 2013, 211 s., ISBN 978-3-525-31044-1. S ohledem na to, ze vëtsina autom se vénuje vÿzkumu nëmeckÿch dëjin, a ze publikace vysla pod zàstitou School of History at the Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies (FRIAS),2 asi není prilis prekvapivé, ze ze sedmi tematickÿch prispëvku jsou tri vénovány právé némeckému imperialismu. V textu nëkterÿch pfispëvkû lze i proto najít cetné odkazy na píedeslé tituly z této lady, zejména na kolektivní monografii Jörn LEONHARD - Ulrike von H IRSCH HAU SEN (edd.), Comparing Empires: Encounters and Transfers in the Long Nineteenth Century, Göttingen-Oakville (CT) 2011. 3 Kapitoly \"Welcome to the Jungle: Imperial Men, ,Inner Africa* and Mental Disorder in Colonial Discourse\" od Sandry MAß, s. 92-116; a \"Tropenkoller: Male Self-Control and the Loss of Colonial Rule\" od Evy BISCH OFF, s. 117-136.
The Military and the Struggle for Democracy in Burma: The Presentation of the Political Upheaval of 1988 in the Official Burmese Press
Examines the official version of the political upheaval in Burma in 1988, particularly the role of the military, as depicted in the state-controlled Burmese press. Official press versions of the 1988 upheaval depict the prodemocracy movement in Burma as fractionalized, unrepresentative of the people, & fraught with lawlessness & pursuit of personal rather than democratic objectives. The military coup in 1988, declaration of martial law, & the military's refusal to accept the outcome of the 1990 elections are portrayed as necessary measures to ensure the survival of Burmese society. It is argued here that military's intervention in government affairs more likely reflects long-held military values & ideologies, eg, the need for slow & gradual transition to democracy & the importance of development of discipline, sense of duty, & patriotism as precursors to democratic society.
