Handbook of teaching and learning in tourism
A burgeoning tourism industry accompanied by a growing demand for employees has translated into an increasing need for tourism education to adequately prepare the workforce to serve the present and future needs of the industry. Past MOOC research has tended to focus on learning outcomes valued in traditional higher education settings, such as achievement and retention. This study recognises that student ratings are an important alternative outcome measure in MOOCs. This paper adopted a semiautomatic text mining approach to collect and analyse 8475 ratings and reviews submitted for 1794 MOOCs. The analysis revealed six important themes that contributed to positive ratings: ‘learning’, ‘understanding’, ‘interesting’, ‘videos’, ‘recommend’, and ‘questions’. The paper then investigated the characteristics of each identified theme based on the proximity of themes, distribution of concepts within themes, and important connections. Based on research findings, the paper presents the following propositions to assist educators and providers to enhance the learning experience in MOOCs: (1) provide realistic learning contexts and instructional conditions in MOOCs to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge that transfers more readily to real-world practices; (2) carefully design the instructional conditions so that some mental challenge and stimulation is required for learners to achieve a full understanding of the content, rather than making MOOCs too simple or effortless to complete; (3) design the course content, materials, and communications to generate interest; (4) allocate sufficient resources to create high-quality video lectures; (5) employ video lectures to elicit positive emotions from MOOC learners and simplify complex, difficult concepts; and (6) incorporate discussion boards in MOOCs and invest in human and digital resources to address learners’ queries.

Online business simulations: authentic teamwork, learning outcomes, and satisfaction

Educators have struggled to incorporate authentic team-based learning (TBL) into the business curriculum despite increasing evidence that collaborative learning can enhance learning outcomes. We investigate the use of online business simulations as a platform for fostering authentic TBL for undergraduate and postgraduate business students studying at seven institutions in Australia and Hong Kong. Quantitative analysis of 365 surveys is supported by focus groups with 14 students. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to model the relationships between teamwork, learning outcomes, and satisfaction. Qualitative results support the statistical modeling and are presented to add further insights and conceptual richness. The findings support our proposition that online business simulations provide an authentic TBL environment, which contributes to learner satisfaction by supporting the development of management-related learning outcomes through socially constructed meaning. This conceptual contribution highlights further avenues for research and leads to some practical implications for educators using simulation-based pedagogies.

Education for sustainability in tourism : a handbook of processes, resources, and strategies
Sustainability is a dominant theme in tourism practice. Increasingly, research and education of tourism stakeholders is also necessary in improving sustainable tourism practice. This book pays systematic attention to education for sustainability in tourism, and is thus a valuable resource for sustainable tourism educators and scholars. The book is divided into four parts. Part I provides a reference for educators seeking to understand core knowledge areas, ethics, corporate social responsibility and governance. Part II examines issues and processes relevant to understanding tourism and sustainability in the formal educational sector, including universities, vocational training and school settings. Part III explores learning and sustainable tourism in non-institutional settings, including destination communities, coaching and mentoring and visitor learning. The final part provides a collection of cases to illustrate the use of different pedagogies and assessment approaches in education for sustainability in tourism. The book will be accompanied by instructor resources to assist educators teaching in the field.

Generation Y is a phenomenon identified by social scientists and social commentators, and is frequently discussed in the media. Referring to the current generation of young people, the label attributes to this generation modes of behaviour, values and attitudes distinct from previous generations. This book looks at Generation Y in a tourism context; in broad conceptual terms such as trends and behaviour, and in applied terms, for example looking at particular types of travel that Generation Y takes part in, and tourism marketing aimed specifically at them. This volume aims to define and examine the current and future generation of tourism workers and consumers, and will be an essential read for researchers and students in tourism studies and related industries.

This study draws on tourism literature and current examples to propose that the emergence of Travel Live Streaming (TLS) provides new affordances for live streamers, viewers, and sponsors. Despite its increasing popularity and the new opportunities for communication and marketing in tourism, TLS has received limited attention in the academic literature. The aim of this paper is to use affordances theory to understand some of the key features and benefits of TLS. It is argued that TLS affordances include temporal, spatial, interactive, and media affordances. These affordances support new opportunities and actions for travel live streamers, viewers, and sponsors. The paper proposes an affordance-based TLS framework and concludes with three propositions to guide future research directions.

Purpose
This paper aims to synthesize the evolving research of human–robot interaction (HRI) in the hospitality and tourism industry, identifying gaps and setting directions for future research.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a mixed-method approach, the study combines inductive co-citation analysis with deductive theory-context-characteristics-methodology analysis.
Findings
The findings trace the progression of HRI knowledge from initial feasibility and acceptance studies to advanced post-adoption experience management. The analysis identifies prevalent theories such as anthropomorphism theory, specific contexts like hotel environments, diverse robot types (e.g. embodied robots), outcome measures (e.g. use intention) and methodologies predominantly comprising survey-based analyses and experimental approaches. The analysis not only illuminates areas of research attention but also uncovers under-explored topics, offering a roadmap for future inquiry in tourism and HRI research.
Originality/value
The paper contributes to the literature by providing a structured framework that not only maps the intellectual structure of HRI research in tourism but also proposes a cohesive integration of disparate theories and methodologies, addressing both practical and academic gaps.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo sintetizar la investigación en evolución sobre la interacción humano-robot (HRI) en la industria de la hospitalidad y el turismo, identificando lagunas y estableciendo direcciones para futuras investigaciones.
Diseño/Metodología/Enfoque
Empleando un enfoque de método mixto, el estudio combina un análisis de cocitación inductivo con un análisis deductivo de Teoría-Contexto-Características-Metodología (TCCM).
Hallazgos
Los hallazgos rastrean la progresión del conocimiento sobre HRI desde estudios iniciales de factibilidad y aceptación hasta la gestión avanzada de experiencias posadopción. El análisis identifica teorías prevalentes como la teoría del antropomorfismo, contextos específicos como los entornos hoteleros, tipos diversos de robots (p. ej., robots encarnados), medidas de resultado (p. ej., intención de uso) y metodologías que comprenden predominantemente análisis basados en encuestas y enfoques experimentales. El análisis no solo ilumina áreas de atención investigativa, sino que también descubre temas poco explorados, ofreciendo una hoja de ruta para futuras investigaciones en turismo e HRI.

Explicating affordances in travel information search: investigating device use in relation to goals and personal characteristics

Despite increasing attention to technology development and its impact on travel information search, research about information search behaviours across multiple devices (i.e., smartphones, laptops, tablets, and desktop computers) has received limited attention. Guided by technology affordance theory, this paper examines the link between device use and information search goals, and the relationship between personal characteristics and device use. The study is based on two independent studies. Data were collected using a mixed-methods approach utilising an online survey and an online trip planning diary. The findings revealed that information searchers were essentially multi-device users and switched between devices based on their information search goals. Moreover, personal characteristics such as demographic characteristics, experience and personality influenced device use. The findings of the research shed light on the elusive concept of affordance to enhance the understanding of the complexity of device usage during travel information search.

Envisioning sustainable tourism futures: An evaluation of the futures wheel method

Methods for researching the future have grown both in variety and rigour, offering new opportunities for understanding sustainable tourism. This paper discusses the value of futures research as a tool for envisioning and planning sustainable tourism futures but observes that there is greater potential for the use of futures methods in tourism. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the usefulness of a particular method known as the futures wheel as a sustainable planning tool for tourism decision makers and researchers. The futures wheel method is combined with a grounded theory approach to capture and distil the tacit knowledge of three 'expert' think tanks. The evaluation suggests that the futures wheel is a useful tool for researching sustainable tourism futures but that its potential may be enhanced if it can be combined with other futures research methods.
