The Ethics of Neoliberalism
iThe 21st century is the age of “neo-liberalism”—a time when the free market is spreading to all areas of economic, political and social life. Yet how is this changing our individual and collective ethics? Is capitalism also becoming our new morality? From the growing popular demand for corporate social responsibility to personal desire for “work-life balance,” it would appear that nonmarket ideals are not only surviving but also thriving. Why then does it seem that capitalism remains as strong as ever?
The Ethics of Neoliberalism boldly proposes that neoliberalism strategically co-opts traditional ethics to ideologically and structurally strengthen capitalism. It produces “the ethical capitalist subject” who is personally responsible for making their society, workplace and even their lives “more ethical” in the face of an immoral but seemingly permanent free market.
Rather than altering our morality, neoliberalism “individualizes” ethics, making us personally responsible for dealing with and resolving its moral failings. In doing so, individuals end up perpetuating the very market system that they morally oppose and feel powerless to ultimately change.
This analysis reveals the complex and paradoxical way capitalism is currently shaping us as “ethical subjects.” People are increasingly asked to ethically “save” capitalism both collectively and personally. This can range from the “moral responsibility” to politically accept austerity following the financial crisis, to the willingness of employees to sacrifice their time and energy to make their neoliberal organizations more “humane,” to the efforts by individuals to contribute to their family and communities despite the pressures of a frenetic global business environment. Neoliberalism, thus, uses our ethics against us, relying on our “good nature” and sense of personal responsibility to reduce its human cost. Ironically, in the new millennium, it seems the more ethical we are, the stronger capitalism becomes.ii

Improved supervised classification of accelerometry data to distinguish behaviors of soaring birds

Soaring birds can balance the energetic costs of movement by switching between flapping, soaring and gliding flight. Accelerometers can allow quantification of flight behavior and thus a context to interpret these energetic costs. However, models to interpret accelerometry data are still being developed, rarely trained with supervised datasets, and difficult to apply. We collected accelerometry data at 140Hz from a trained golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) whose flight we recorded with video that we used to characterize behavior. We applied two forms of supervised classifications, random forest (RF) models and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) models. The KNN model was substantially easier to implement than the RF approach but both were highly accurate in classifying basic behaviors such as flapping (85.5% and 83.6% accurate, respectively), soaring (92.8% and 87.6%) and sitting (84.1% and 88.9%) with overall accuracies of 86.6% and 92.3% respectively. More detailed classification schemes, with specific behaviors such as banking and straight flights were well classified only by the KNN model (91.24% accurate; RF = 61.64% accurate). The RF model maintained its accuracy of classifying basic behavior classification accuracy of basic behaviors at sampling frequencies as low as 10Hz, the KNN at sampling frequencies as low as 20Hz. Classification of accelerometer data collected from free ranging birds demonstrated a strong dependence of predicted behavior on the type of classification model used. Our analyses demonstrate the consequence of different approaches to classification of accelerometry data, the potential to optimize classification algorithms with validated flight behaviors to improve classification accuracy, ideal sampling frequencies for different classification algorithms, and a number of ways to improve commonly used analytical techniques and best practices for classification of accelerometry data.

Effectiveness of an artificial intelligence-based system to curtail wind turbines to reduce eagle collisions

Operating wind-power projects often includes protecting volant wildlife. One method for doing this uses an automated system to detect, identify (through use of artificial intelligence; AI), track animals (targets) and curtail turbines when risk of a collision is high. However, assessments of the effectiveness, in terms of identification accuracy and subsequent turbine curtailment of such systems are lacking. Over 1 year, we assessed such an automated system installed at a wind project in California, USA to determine its identification accuracy and rates at which \"virtual” curtailments were ordered (without slowing turbines), for eagles (intended targets) and non-eagle targets. The system correctly identified 77% of eagles and 85% of non-eagles. Curtailment orders occurred 6 times more frequently for non-eagle targets (5,439) than for eagle targets (850). Greater abundance of common ravens that were misidentified as eagles influenced the effectiveness of the system by greatly increasing unintended curtailment orders. The balance between costs (price of the IdentiFlight system, reduced energy generation, turbine wear and maintenance) and benefits (reduced collisions between intended target species and turbines) may depend upon the biological setting, speed at which operators can curtail turbines, and the objectives of the operator when considering the IdentiFlight system.

In the present study, the presence of the Enterobacterales, Staphylococcus spp., Mammaliicoccus spp., and Enterococcus spp. in cloacal samples of nestling ospreys ( Pandion haliaetus ), a fish-eating specialist, from Mono Lake, California, USA was examined by a multiphasic approach, including antimicrobial and biocide susceptibility testing, genotyping, and whole genome sequencing of selected isolates. The most commonly detected species was Escherichia coli , followed by Mammaliicoccus sciuri , Staphylococcus delphini , Enterococcus faecalis , Enterococcus faecium , Hafnia alvei , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Citrobacter braakii and single isolates of Edwardsiella tarda , Edwardsiella albertii , Klebsiella aerogenes , Plesiomonas shigelloides and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius . Multi-drug resistance (MDR) was observed in two E . coli isolates and in an Enterococcus faecium isolate. The MDR bla CTX-M-55 -positive E . coli belonged to the pandemic clone ST58. The results of the present study suggest that nestling ospreys are exposed to MDR bacteria, possibly through the ingestion of contaminated fish. Ospreys may be good biosentinels for the presence of these microorganisms and antibiotic resistance in the local environment and the risk for other wildlife, livestock and humans.
