Many residents unsure to stay or flee
To stay or to go was the question of the day for thousands of Daytona Beach-area residents for whom mandatory evacuation and curfew orders took effect Friday. \"We've got to get over to the other side,\" said LeAnn Free, pointing to the mainland as she and a friend stood at the corner of International Speedway Boulevard and Grandview Avenue. \"I just can't stand it. I'm scared.\" Free, 41, and her friend were told to leave a beachside hotel and wanted to get a room on the mainland, but they needed money and were unable to find a bank that was open. The mandatory evacuations were ordered Friday morning for the peninsula and those who live in mobile and manufactured homes. An 8 p.m.-to-6 a.m. curfew for the same areas began Friday evening. Port Orange police warned they would arrest people for violating the curfew. \"Most of the hotels are empty, but some people in condos have decided to stay,\" Daytona Beach Shores City Manager Michael Booker said midmorning Friday. City officials made it clear those who ignore the evacuation order do so at their own risk. \"Our emergency vehicles will not operate in hurricane- force winds,\" Booker said.

High school Breakers warned ; Asher, Hall target underage partiers
[Bud Asher] said high school students from outside Volusia County flocked here on day trips in March because their vacations coincided with Spring Break. Asher and [Hall] said they didn't think local teens were part of the problem because Volusia County schools went on break at a different time. Asher asked Hall to arrange a meeting with superintendents from Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk and Seminole counties. Hall wrote the six superintendents last month, urging them to talk with their high school principals to tell students that Daytona Beach police will be cracking down next March. Hall also plans to discuss the issue with superintendents at a statewide meeting in December.
