Enhanced plasmonic absorption of Pt cuboctahedra-WO3 nanohybrids used as visible light photocatalysts for overall water splitting
Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects of nanoscale plasmonic metals/semiconductor composites have been extensively applied into visible light photocatalysis. However, Pt nanoparticles (NPs) with the visible LSPR absorption maxima have rarely been used as a photosensitizer to facilitate photocatalytic reactions, especially the photocatalytic overall water splitting (POWS) reaction, presumably because they feature weak light absorption. Herein, we present that the increased plasmonic absorption and local field enhancement can be achieved in the wide visible range by exploiting the simulated and experimental expressions of Pt nanocuboctahedra and Pt cuboctahedra-WO 3 nanohybrids (Pt-WO 3 ). First, monodisperse Pt cuboctahedra with different sizes, a hierarchical WO 3 nanoarchitecture composed of radially patterned WO 3 nanopillars, and Pt-WO 3 were systematically synthesized. Subsequently, visible plasmonic Pt-WO 3 photocatalysts were employed in the POWS tests and exhibited the significant activity enhancement in the visible light region. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of greater than 7% within the range of visible light has been achieved for the optimal Pt-WO 3 .
Sub-nanosecond memristor based on ferroelectric tunnel junction
Next-generation non-volatile memories with ultrafast speed, low power consumption, and high density are highly desired in the era of big data. Here, we report a high performance memristor based on a Ag/BaTiO 3 /Nb:SrTiO 3 ferroelectric tunnel junction (FTJ) with the fastest operation speed (600 ps) and the highest number of states (32 states or 5 bits) per cell among the reported FTJs. The sub-nanosecond resistive switching maintains up to 358 K, and the write current density is as low as 4 × 10 3  A cm −2 . The functionality of spike-timing-dependent plasticity served as a solid synaptic device is also obtained with ultrafast operation. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that a Nb:SrTiO 3 electrode with a higher carrier concentration and a metal electrode with lower work function tend to improve the operation speed. These results may throw light on the way for overcoming the storage performance gap between different levels of the memory hierarchy and developing ultrafast neuromorphic computing systems. Memristor devices based on ferroelectric tunnel junctions are promising, but suffer from quite slow switching times. Here, the authors report on ultrafast switching times at and above room temperature of 600ps in Ag/BaTiO3/Nb:SrTiO3 based ferroelectric tunnel junctions.
A single-cell transcriptomic study of heterogeneity in human embryonic tanycytes
Disruptions in energy homeostasis can lead to diseases like obesity and diabetes, affecting millions of people each year. Tanycytes, the adult stem cells in the hypothalamus, play crucial roles in assisting hypothalamic neurons in maintaining energy balance. Although tanycytes have been extensively studied in rodents, our understanding of human tanycytes remains limited. In this study, we utilized single-cell transcriptomics data to explore the heterogeneity of human embryonic tanycytes, investigate their gene regulatory networks, analyze their intercellular communication, and examine their developmental trajectory. Our analysis revealed the presence of two clusters of β tanycytes and three clusters of α tanycytes in our dataset. Surprisingly, human embryonic tanycytes displayed significant similarities to mouse tanycytes in terms of marker gene expression and transcription factor activities. Trajectory analysis indicated that α tanycytes were the first to be generated, giving rise to β tanycytes in a dorsal–ventral direction along the third ventricle. Furthermore, our CellChat analyses demonstrated that tanycytes generated earlier along the developmental lineages exhibited increased intercellular communication compared to those generated later. In summary, we have thoroughly characterized the heterogeneity of human embryonic tanycytes from various angles. We are confident that our findings will serve as a foundation for future research on human tanycytes.
Intratumoral and peritumoral radiomics nomograms for the preoperative prediction of lymphovascular invasion and overall survival in non-small cell lung cancer
Objectives To evaluate the predictive value of intratumoral and peritumoral radiomics and radiomics nomogram for preoperative lymphovascular invasion (LVI) status and overall survival (OS) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods In total, 240 NSCLC patients from our institution were randomly divided into the training cohort ( n = 145) and internal validation cohort ( n = 95) with a ratio of 6:4, and 65 patients from the Cancer Imaging Archive were enrolled as the external validation cohort. We extracted 1217 CT-based radiomics features from the gross tumor volume (GTV) and gross tumor volume incorporating peritumoral 3, 6, and 9 mm regions (GPTV 3 , GPTV 6 , GPTV 9 ). A radiomics nomogram based on clinical independent predictors and radiomics score (Radscore) of the best radiomics model was constructed. The correlation between factors and OS was evaluated with the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. Results Compared with GTV, GPTV 3 , and GPTV 6 radiomics models, GPTV 9 radiomics model exhibited better prediction performance with the AUCs of 0.82, 0.75, and 0.67 in the training, internal validation, and external validation cohorts, respectively. In the clinical model, smoking and clinical stage were independent predictors. The nomogram incorporating independent predictors and GPTV 9 -Radscore was clinically useful, with the AUCs of 0.89, 0.83, and 0.66 in three cohorts. Pathological LVI, GPTV 9 -Radscore-predicted, and Nomoscore-predicted LVI were associated with poor OS ( p < 0.05). Conclusions CT-based radiomics nomogram can predict LVI and OS in patients with NSCLC and may help in making personalized treatment strategies before surgery. Key Points • Compared with GTV, GPTV 3 , and GPTV 6 radiomics models, GPTV 9 radiomics model showed better prediction performance for LVI status in NSCLC. • The radiomics nomogram based on GPTV 9 radiomics features and clinical independent predictors could effectively predict LVI status and OS in NSCLC and outperformed the clinical model. • The radiomics nomogram had a wider scope of clinical application .
Lactobacillus plantarum Restores Intestinal Permeability Disrupted by Salmonella Infection in Newly-hatched Chicks
Salmonella infections in newly hatched chicks result in enteric and systemic diseases with a high mortality. Probiotics can improve the health of a host. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus plantarum LTC-113 on the gut permeability in the presence or absence of Salmonella ( Salmonella Typhimurium) infection. Newly hatched chicks were randomly allocated to 4 treatments (i) NC (negative control); (ii) LAC (the L. plantarum LTC-113-treated group); (iii) SAL (the Salmonella -infected group), and (iv) LAC + SAL (the L. plantarum LTC-113-treated and Salmonella -infected group). Compared with the NC group, the intestinal permeability and claudin-2 (CLDN-2) were significantly increased, while mRNA levels of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and claudin-5 (CLDN-5) were significantly decreased in the SAL group. However, these changes were eliminated in the LAC + SAL group. Additionally, numbers of Salmonella in liver, spleen and ceca were significantly reduced in the LAC + SAL group compared with the SAL group. Moreover, L. plantarum LTC-113 prevented the increase of inflammatory meditators myeloperoxidase (MPO), LITAF, IL-1β, IL-6 and inflammation scores induced by Salmonella . These findings indicate that L. plantarum LTC-113 can protect hosts from Salmonella induced intestinal barrier disruption by regulating expression of tight junction genes and inflammatory meditators and decreasing Salmonella colonization.
COL28 promotes proliferation, migration, and EMT of renal tubular epithelial cells
Type XXVIII collagen (COL28) is involved in cancer and lung fibrosis. COL28 polymorphisms and mutations might be involved in kidney fibrosis, but the exact role of COL28 in renal fibrosis is unknown. This study explored the function of COL28 in renal tubular cells by examining the expression of COL28 mRNA and the effects of COL28 overexpression in human tubular cells. COL28 mRNA expression and localization were observed in normal and fibrotic kidney tissues from humans and mice using real-time PCR, western blot, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry. The consequences of COL28 overexpression on cell proliferation, migration, cell polarity, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) induced by TGF-β1 were examined in human tubular HK-2 cells. COL28 expression was low in human normal renal tissues, mainly observed in the renal tubular epithelial cells and especially in proximal renal tubules. COL28 protein expression in human and mouse obstructive kidney disease was higher than in normal tissues (p < 0.05) and more significant in the UUO2-Week than the UUO1-Week group. The overexpression of COL28 promoted HK-2 cell proliferation and enhanced their migration ability (all p < 0.05). TGF-β1 (10 ng/ml) induced COL28 mRNA expression in HK-2 cells, decreased E-cadherin and increased α-SMA in the COL28-overexpression group compared with controls (p < 0.05). ZO-1 expression decreased while COL6 increased in the COL28-overexpression group compared with controls (p < 0.05). In conclusion, COL28 overexpression promotes the migration and proliferation of renal tubular epithelial cells. The EMT could also be involved. COL28 could be a therapeutic target against renal- fibrotic diseases.
The augmentative efficacy of second-generation anti-psychotics (SGA) to anti-depressants in treating treatment-resistant depression: a network meta-regression analysis
Background To compare the augmentative efficacy of second-generation anti-psychotics (SGA) to anti-depressants in adult patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) adjusting follow-up period and explore the underlying\"time window\"effects of the regimens. Methods Databases included Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Google Scholars as well as Clinicaltrials.gov from inception to May 15, 2024, for relevant randomized controlled studies (RCTs) were retrieved. The primary endpoint was Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). The secondary endpoint was MADRS response rate. The tertiary endpoints were Clinical Global Impression-severity (CGI-S) and MADRS remission rate. Standard mean difference (SMD) and hazard ratio (HR) were generated by Bayesian network meta-regression (NMR) for pairwise comparisons on dichotomous and consecutive variants, respectively. Results A total of 23 studies (N = 10679) with 24 augmentation agents were included in the NMR. For the primary endpoint, compared with ADT, aripiprazole 3 - 12 mg/d, brexpiprazole 1 - 3 mg/d, cariprazine 1.5 - 3 mg/d, olanzapine 6 - 12 mg/d and fluoxetine 25 - 50 mg/d combination, and quetiapine XR were significantly effective (SMD ranged from - 0.28 to - 0.114) and their effect sizes were comparable, after adjusting follow-up period, the results resembled the former except for quetiapine XR (SMD = - 0.10, 95%CI: - 0.212 to 0.014). Brexpiprazole 3 mg/d (7.22 weeks), cariprazine 1 - 2 mg/d (2.97 weeks), cariprazine 2–4.5 mg/d (2.81 weeks), cariprazine 3 mg/d (7.16 weeks), olanzapine 6 - 12 mg/d (4.11 weeks) and quetiapine 150 - 300 mg/d (3.89 weeks) showed\"time window\". For the secondary endpoint, brexpiprazole 3 mg/d and rispridone 0.5 - 3 mg/d was evidently superior to all others (HR ranged from 1.748 to 2.301). For the tertiary endpoints, as for CGI-S, aripiprazole 2 - 20 mg/d, brexpiprazole 2 - 3 mg/d, cariprazine 3 mg/d, olanzapine 6 - 12 mg/d and fluoxetine 25 - 50 mg/d combination, and rispridone 0.5 - 3 mg/d were conspicuously effective compared with ADT (SMD ranged from - 0.438 to - 0.126) and for MADRS remission rate, aripiprazole 2 - 20 mg/d, brexpiprazole 3 mg/d, cariprazine 3 mg/d, rispridone 0.5 - 3 mg/d were conspicuously effective compared with ADT (HR ranged from 0.477 to 3.326). Conclusion Holistically considering each endpoint and corresponding \"time window\", certain SGAs appeared to be efficient augmentation to anti-depressants for TRD, but aripiprazole was relatively more effective and better tolerated.
Identification and characterization of long intergenic noncoding RNAs in bovine mammary glands
Background Mammary glands of dairy cattle produce milk for the newborn offspring and for human consumption. Long intergenic noncoding RNAs (lincRNAs) play various functions in eukaryotic cells. However, types and roles of lincRNAs in bovine mammary glands are still poorly understood. Results Using computational methods, 886 unknown intergenic transcripts (UITs) were identified from five RNA-seq datasets from bovine mammary glands. Their non-coding potentials were predicted by using the combination of four software programs (CPAT, CNCI, CPC and hmmscan), with 184 lincRNAs identified. By comparison to the NONCODE2016 database and a domestic-animal long noncoding RNA database (ALDB), 112 novel lincRNAs were revealed in bovine mammary glands. Many lincRNAs were found to be located in quantitative trait loci (QTL). In particular, 36 lincRNAs were found in 172 milk related QTLs, whereas one lincRNA was within clinical mastitis QTL region. In addition, targeted genes for 10 lincRNAs with the highest fragments per kilobase of transcript per million fragments mapped (FPKM) were predicted by LncTar for forecasting potential biological functions of these lincRNAs. Further analyses indicate involvement of lincRNAs in several biological functions and different pathways. Conclusion Our study has provided a panoramic view of lincRNAs in bovine mammary glands and suggested their involvement in many biological functions including susceptibility to clinical mastitis as well as milk quality and production. This integrative annotation of mammary gland lincRNAs broadens and deepens our understanding of bovine mammary gland biology.
Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the nurses’ attitudes towards communication with the patient scale among Chinese nurses
Background Nurses’ attitudes towards communication with patients influence the effectiveness of communication, which could reduce patients’ negative emotions and improve their adherence to medication and treatment. The aim of this study was to develop a Chinese version of the nurses’ attitudes towards communication with the patient (ACO) scale and examined its validity and reliability. Methods The Chinese version ACO scale was generated using the translation-backward translation method and cross-cultural adaption. The psychometric properties of the scale, including item-to-total correlations, discriminative validity, content validity, structural validity, convergent validity, internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability, were evaluated. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 610 clinical nurses from four hospitals and were analyzed using both exploratory factor analysis and second-order confirmatory factor analysis. Result The reliability was demonstrated with item-to-total correlations of greater than 0.40, Cronbach’s alpha of 0.946 and intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.879. Content validity was acceptable and discriminative validity showed a significant discriminative ability. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed a three-factor model. Convergent validity was confirmed by a moderate relation with a measure for nurses’ empathy ( r  = 0.375, P <0.01).The test-retest reliability was satisfactory within a 2-week interval. Conclusion The ACO is a reliable and valid instrument to assess nurses’ attitudes towards communication with patient in Chinese hospitals.
Development and validation of a 5K low-density SNP chip for Hainan cattle
Background This study aimed to design and develop a 5K low-density liquid chip for Hainan cattle utilizing targeted capture sequencing technology. The chip incorporates a substantial number of functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci derived from public literature, including SNP loci significantly associated with immunity, heat stress, meat quality, reproduction, and other traits. Additionally, SNPs located in the coding regions of immune-related genes from the Bovine Genome Variation Database (BGVD) and Hainan cattle-specific SNP loci were included. Results A total of 5,293 SNPs were selected, resulting in 9,837 DNA probes with a coverage rate of 85.69%, thereby creating a Hainan cattle-specific 5K Genotyping by Target Sequencing (GBTS) liquid chip. Evaluation with 152 cattle samples demonstrated excellent clustering performance and a detection rate ranging from 96.60 to 99.07%, with 94.5% of SNP sites exhibiting polymorphism. The chip achieved 100% gender coverage and displayed a heterozygosity rate between 14.20% and 29.65%, with a repeatability rate of 99.65–99.85%. Analyses using Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) revealed the potential regulatory roles of exonic SNPs in immune response pathways. Conclusion The development and validation of the 5K GBTS liquid chip for Hainan cattle represent a valuable tool for genome analysis and genetic diversity assessment. Furthermore, it facilitates breed identification, gender determination, and kinship analysis, providing a foundation for the efficient utilization and development of local cattle genetic resources.
