'Human guinea pigs' suffer loss of dignity
by
MICHAEL D'ANTONIO. Michael D'Antonio is the author of "State Boys Rebellion."
in
Boyce, Frederick
2004
Lately, the label that used to spark outrage is being abused and misused. It is misused by desperate patients who want to participate in trials for new drugs and clamor to become human guinea pigs because that role offers them hope. It is abused by alarmists who see bad science everywhere. Despite the cheerful attitudes of patients who want experimental treatments, and the inflammatory rhetoric about orphans, neither group has a legitimate claim to the label human guinea pig. This is not just a matter of language, but a matter of real concern among those who were once used as human guinea pigs and resent the casual use of the phrase. Now 63, Boyce has metastatic colon cancer, which his doctor has said will kill him. You might expect him to blame the doses of radiation his colon received years ago. But Boyce refuses to speculate. He knows it's impossible to make a good argument for cause and effect in his case. Besides, that's not the point to stress when you talk about human guinea pigs.

The shadow president : the truth about Mike Pence
Little-known outside his home state until Donald Trump made him his running mate, Mike Pence--who proclaims himself a Christian first, a conservative second, and a Republican third--has long worn a carefully-constructed mask of Midwestern nice. Behind his self-proclaimed humility and self-abasing deference, however, hides a man whose own presidential ambitions have blazed since high school. Pence's drive for power, perhaps inspired by his belief that God might have big plans for him, explains why he shocked his allies by lending Christian credibility to a scandal-plagued candidate like Trump. In this landmark biography, Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael D'Antonio and Emmy-nominated journalist Peter Eisner follow the path Pence followed from Catholic Democrat to conservative evangelical Republican. They reveal how he used his time as rightwing radio star to build connections with powerful donors; how he was a lackluster lawmaker in Congress but a prodigious fundraiser from the GOP's billionaire benefactors; and how, once he locked in his views on the issues--anti-gay, pro-gun, anti-abortion, pro big-business--he became laser-focused on his own pursuit of power. As THE SHADOW PRESIDENT reveals, Mike Pence is the most important and powerful Christian Right politician America has ever seen. Driven as much by theology as personal ambition, Pence is now positioned to seize the big prize--the presidency--and use it to fashion a nation more pleasing to his god and corporate sponsors.

Endoscopic Approaches to the Paranasal Sinuses and Skull Base
With the continuing evolution of endoscopic techniques for surgery of lesions of the paranasal sinuses and skull base, and the reduced morbidity associated with this minimally invasive modality, the method has gained widespread use in recent years. This work offers a thorough review of all endoscopic approaches for access to the nose and paranasal sinuses and, through them, to the skull base. Central to this guide is the emphasis on profound knowledge of the complex anatomy in this area, as well as the many vital structures that can be endangered there. To this end, more than 900 full-color images, most photographs from cadaver dissections, are put to brilliant use.
Key Features:
* Internationally renowned specialists and pioneers from Europe and the United States as editors and contributors
* Full-color photos from fresh cadaver dissections illustrate all steps for each approach
* Specific anatomic landmarks as revealed during each step are detailed, providing confidence in spatial orientation
* Correlative CT sections provide crucial additional information
* Risks and potential complications are included, as well as methods to reduce them
Endoscopic Approaches to the Paranasal Sinuses and Skull Base is intended as an indispensable guide for residents, fellows, and specialist surgeons in otolaryngology, neurosurgery, and skull base surgery.
AI at war: how big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning are changing naval warfare
Artificial intelligence (AI) may be the most beneficial technological development of the twenty-first century. Media hype and raised expectations for results, however, have clouded understanding of the true nature of AI--including its limitations and potential. AI at War provides a balanced and practical understanding of applying AI to national security and warfighting professionals as well as a wide array of other readers. Although the themes and findings of the chapters are relevant across the U.S. Department of Defense, to include all Services, the Joint Staff and defense agencies as well as allied and partner ministries of defense, this book is a case study of warfighting functions in the Naval Services--the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Sam J. Tangredi and George Galdorisi bring together over thirty experts, ranging from former DOD officials and retired flag officers to scientists and active duty junior officers. These contributors present views on a vast spectrum of subjects pertaining to the implementation of AI in modern warfare, including strategy, policy, doctrine, weapons, and ethical concerns.
