Design and synthesis of some novel hybrid molecules based on 4-thiazolidinone bearing pyridine-pyrazole scaffolds: molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations of its major constituent onto DNA gyrase inhibition
Due to multidrug resistance, microbial infections have become significant on a global level. As infections caused by several resistant bacteria and fungi severely harm mankind, scientists have developed new antibiotics to combat these infections. In order to develop novel antimicrobial agents, a series of 4-thiazolidinone-based 5-arylidene hybrids (5a–o) have been designed and synthesized to evaluate their antibacterial and antifungal activities. For the determination of the structure of a novel synthesized hybrid, various spectral techniques, e.g., IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and Mass spectroscopy, were used. Two bacterial gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), two gram-positive strains (Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes), and one fungal strain (Candida albicans) were used to evaluate antimicrobial activity. Compounds 5c, 5g, and 5i were effective due to their MIC values of 62.5 μg/mL against tested bacterial strains (S. pyogenes (5c), P. aeruginosa (5g), and E. coli (5i), respectively.) and 250 μg/mL against C. albicans fungal strains, respectively. Additionally, molecular docking and 100 ns molecular dynamic simulations were carried out to investigate the stability of molecular contacts and to establish how the newly synthesized inhibitors fit together in the most stable conformations.
The further adventures of Red Sonja
\"She lived in a savage world in an uncivilized age - a world ruled by men and governed by the sword. The[y] called her... Red Sonja - for her flame red hair, and for the smoldering fire of her pride, which gave her sword-arm a strength that few men could match, and none had ever defeated. This collection contains a variety of issues from the original Marvel Comics series 'The Savage Sword of Conan,' as well as Sonja Tales from 'Kull and the Barbarians,' with each page re-mastered for this volume. Also included is a gallery of pin-ups by Frank Thorne, Howard Chaykin, and more. These tales are where it all began, and set the stage for the current Red Sonja series from Dynamite Entertainment\"--back cover.
Design, Synthesis, Antibacterial and Antifungal Evaluation of 1,2,4-Triazole-thiazolidin-4-one Hybrids
A series of previously unknown [5-(substituted phenyl)-4 H -1,2,4-triazol-4-yl]thiazolidin-4-ones have been successfully synthesized, and their structure has been confirmed by IR and 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The synthesized compounds have been tested for in vitro activity against bacterial and fungal strains. Compounds containing 4-OCH 3 , 4-NO 2 and 2,3-(OCH 3 ) 2 groups in the phenyl ring of the arylidene substituent demonstrated moderate to excellent antibacterial activity, while compounds containing 2-Br, 4-Cl, 4-F, 4-OCH 3 , 4-CH 3 , 2,4-(CH 3 ) 2 , and 4-NO 2 groups exhibited excellent to good antifungal activity. The MIC values for the 2,3-(OCH 3 ) 2 derivatives against various bacterial strains varied from 12.5 to 50 µg/mL. In terms of the antifungal activity, the 2-Br derivative showed the significant activity against C. albicans (MIC 200 µg/mL).
Production of biosurfactant by Nocardia otitidiscaviarum and its role in biodegradation of crude oil
Nocardia otitidiscaviarum microbial type cultural collection 6471 isolated from oil contaminated Alang India seawater was examined for production of surface active compound. Isolate shows halos and α-heamolysis on cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and blood agar respectively indicating the production of biosurfactant. Biosurfactant was extracted by precipitation and was partially purified. Partially purified product was characterized by thin layer chromatography and Infra-red spectroscopy and was identified as glycolipid. Sugar present in glycolipid was rhamnose and hence, biosurfactant was quantified as rhamnose equivalent. Role of cell-surface hydrophobicity and emulsification activity in correlation with biosurfactant production was examined. Correlation between biosurfactant production, growth and crude oil degradation was also examined and showed positive correlation at significant level 0.001 and 0.01 respectively. Thus, this is a first report on a marine strain of Nocardia otitidiscaviarum microbial type culture collection 6471, which can be a potential candidate for restoration of oil contaminated marine environment.
Chemical characterization and quantification of siderophores produced by marine and terrestrial aspergilli
Ten aspergilli (five each from marine and terrestrial habitats) were screened for siderophore production. All test isolates produced siderophores as indicated by a positive reaction in the FeCl 3 test, chrome azurol sulphonate assay, and chrome azurol sulphonate agar plate test. Further, the test isolates were compared for their siderophore production potential and chemical characteristics. Examination of the chemical nature of the siderophores revealed that all test isolates produced hydroxamate siderophores that were trihydroxamate hexadentates. Wide-spread occurrence of siderophores in marine isolates indicate their functional role in maintaining overall productivity of coastal waters. Among all test aspergilli, marine Aspergillus versicolor was found to be the largest siderophore producer (182.5 µg/mL desferrioxamine mesylate equivalent), least siderophore production was recorded in a marine strain of Aspergillus niger (3.5 µg/mL desferrioxamine mesylate equivalent).Key words: catecholates, carboxylates, hexadentates, hydroxamates, siderophores.
East-Indian college student's perceptions of family strengths
The Family Strengths Inventory (FSI), and a demographic questionnaire were distributed to 218 college students (120 women and 98 men), enrolled at a large university in Western India to determine their attitudes toward family strengths. A second objective was to determine whether ten demographic variables: age, gender, type of parental marriage, family type, parental socioeconomic status, religiosity, maternal employment, number of siblings, familial decisionmaking patterns, and parental marital satisfaction were related to perceived family strengths. A third objective was to determine if the six factors identified as strengths in an American sample when using the Family Strengths Inventory were the same in the Indian sample. Results indicated that three demographic variables were significantly related to family strengths: gender, type of parental marriage, and familial decision-making patterns. Factor analyses showed that five factors explained 40% of the variance in FSI scores for the Indian sample. Implications for studying Indian family strengths using the Family Strengths Inventory are discussed.
Assessment of surface water of Gulf of Kachchh, west coast of India: a chemometric approach
The present study is aimed at investigation of surface water quality of Gulf of Kachchh (GoK), Gujarat. The main objective of this study was to convert complex data set of water quality parameters from GoK into comprehensive, simple, and interpretable observations. Hence, physicochemical parameters and nutrients of surface water from GoK were analysed. Chemometric results indicated that oxygen, salinity, dissolved solids, nutrient, and natural conditions were the factors that affected surface water quality. The water quality index was calculated to identify water quality classes to evaluate the spatio-seasonal trend in the study area. The results revealed that water quality was moderate in summer, worst in pre-monsoon, and best in post-monsoon. The study also highlighted that Marine National Park (central GoK) was observed to be comparatively in good condition with abundant marine biodiversity. Thus, the results of chemometric study of water quality parameters can be a valuable tool for government authorities for sustainable development of GoK.
Force Sensing Surgical Grasper with Folding Capacitive Sensor
Minimally-invasive surgery (MIS) has brought many benefits to the operating room, however, MIS procedures result in an absence of force feedback, and surgeons cannot as accurately feel the tissue they are working on, or the forces that they are applying. One of the barriers to introducing MIS instruments with force feedback systems is the high cost of manufacturing and assembly. Instruments must also be sterilized before every use, a process that can destroy embedded sensing systems. An instrument that can be disposed of after a single use and produced in bulk at a low cost is desirable. Printed circuit micro-electro-mechanical systems (PCMEMS) is an emerging manufacturing technology that may represent an economically viable method of bulk manufacturing small, single-use medical devices, including surgical graspers. This thesis presents the design and realization of a PCMEMS surgical grasper that can fit within a 5 mm trocar, and can accurately measure forces in 3 axes, over a range of +/-4 N.The designed instrument is the first PCMEMS grasper to feature multi-axis sensing, and has a sensing range twice as large as current PCMEMS devices. Experimental results suggest that the performance of the sensing system is similar to conventionally-manufactured MIS instruments that use capacitive force transducers. The techniques applied in this thesis may be useful for developing a range of PCMEMS devices with capacitive sensors. Improvements to the design of the grasper and sensing system are suggested, and several points are presented to inform the direction of future work related to PCMEMS MIS instruments.
