2001
Investigated the effects of teacher gender, student gender, and classroom subject (mathematics or English) on teacher-student interactions. Observations of high school students and teachers indicated that female mathematics teachers and male and female English teachers tended to interact somewhat more with male students. This was not the result of male students having initiated more direct verbal interactions with teachers. (SM)

Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity
2007
The present study examined public perceptions toward children with autism or with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A convenience sample was used consisting of 30 children (7-12-year-olds) and 30 adults. Participants read a stereotyped scenario featuring either a child with autism, a child with ADHD, or a normal child. Child participants were significantly more likely than adults to (a) express dislike/avoidance toward a child described with either stereotypic autistic or ADHD behaviors, and (b) perceive the child with ADHD as unlike themselves. However, child participants and adults were equally likely to see the autistic child as unlike themselves. Reasons for the different perceptions of children and adults may include differences in perceived threat and in categorization.

2004
The psychological and educational consequences of sexual harassment for high school students were investigated in two studies. Both studies involved a modified survey originally designed for the American Association of University Women (1993). In Study 1, which involved 760 male and 779 female high school students (mainly 16- to 19-year-olds), we compared the behaviors and attitudes of (a) students who had recently been harassed and were upset by it, and (b) students who had not been harassed. Harassment led to several negative psychological and educational consequences rather than to a general stress reaction. Consequences varied with the type of harassment experienced. In Study 2, we surveyed 30 male and 67 female university students who were enrolled in a 1st year psychology course. We found that current doubt about romantic relations was associated with two types of harassment experienced during high school. Thus, some specific consequences of harassment might be long-lasting. 2007
The present study surveyed the prevalence of sexual harassment among high school
students. A total of 1,582 students from 18 schools completed a version of the
American Association of University
Women (1993)
survey. Reported sexual harassment events
were restricted to those that: a) had been experienced first-hand, b) had
occurred within the preceding two weeks, and c) were reported by students who
were notably upset by their experiences. Despite this stringent approach, sexual
harassment was found to be a significant problem in high schools. Fifteen
percent of students were both sexually harassed and very or somewhat upset by
their harassment experiences. Nearly half of these upset students were
recipients of physical forms of sexual harassment.
La présente étude s'est penchée sur la
prévalence du harcèlement sexuel chez les étudiants
de l'école secondaire. En tout 1 582 étudiants de 18
écoles ont répondu à une version de
l'enquête de l'
American Association of University Women
(1993)

1999
Studied the effects of item content and stereotypic threat to gender differences in mathematical problem solving through two experiments, one with 63 seventh and eighth graders and the other with 174 college students. Results suggest that gender-stereotype threat could be a big factor in gender differences in mathematical problem solving. (SLD)

1998
Axenic tumor cultures of poplar cells, clone H11-11, were grown in the presence of [14C]-trichloroethylene (TCE) (uniformly labeled). The cells were capable of metabolizing TCE to produce trichloroethanol, di- and trichloroacetic acid. Some of the carbon from TCE was found in insoluble, nonextractable cell residue, and small amounts were mineralized to [14C] CO2. Poplar cuttings grown in soil and exposed to TCE produced the same metabolites. In field trials, trees were planted in soil in test cells and exposed to TCE via underground water injection during the growing season. During the growing season, at least 95% of the TCE was removed from the influent water stream in cells containing trees. Mass balance studies conducted in the laboratory indicated that 70 to 90% of the TCE was transpired; however, greenhouse and field study results showed that less than 5% of the total TCE taken up by the plants is transpired. These results show that significant TCE uptake and degradation occur in poplars. Poplars appear to be useful for in situ remediation of TCE-contaminated sites under proper conditions.
