Social Support
Social support, defined as the feeling of being cared for, valued, and part of a mutually supporting social network, has positive benefits on mental and physical health. We examine the psychobiological routes by which these effects may manifest themselves, as well as the contexts in which socially supportive actions may misfire. Genetic factors and the early environment play a role in the development of social support. We look at how social assistance is received differently by men and women, as well as across cultures. In some cases, offering social assistance has the same advantages as getting it. A wide range of social support interventions, including those delivered through the internet, have been studied and found to have the ability to provide emotional and informational assistance to persons who might otherwise be alone.
