Trailing 8-0 in potentially the final game of the season at Leesville Road, Hoggard's Marlina Oakes reeled off 11 straight service points and the Vikings went on to capture the final game, 15-13, and a five-game victory over the Pride in the 4A Eastern volleyball finals in Raleigh.

8K RUN STARTS DOWNTOWN; River Run is Sunday
Race director Melody Long is trying to get everyone possible involved in Sunday's 8K Run by the River Race through Wilmington's downtown streets. Her husband's getting up at 7 a.m. in the morning, her parents are taking charge of her toddler for the day and any fellow employee at sponsoring radio station Rock 104.5 that could be recruited, has been. So far, Long, who took over diretorship of the Riverfest '97 event in September, has 20 pre-race entries. But, interest really has picked up in the past week.

PREP FOOTBALL; South Columbus rolls over Pender
South Columbus claimed the Waccamaw 2A/3A Conference's top 2A seed Friday, finishing unbeaten in league play with a 52-0 homecoming rout of Pender. South Columbus (9-1, 6-0) will play host to Southwest Guilford Friday in the opening round of the 2A playoffs. EAST COLUMBUS 14, WHITEVILLE 3: Reggie Swindell ran for 110 yards and a touchdown as East Columbus tuned up for the first round of the 2A playoffs with a win over host Whiteville. East Columbus (7-3, 4-2 Waccamaw 2A/3A Conference) will play host to Clayton at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the playoffs. Whiteville finished the season 3-7.

Allensworth leads Javs to win at ACU ; (South Texas Report)
The Javelinas never trailed as they jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead. ACU closed to within one point a few times in the first half before the Javelinas eventually pulled out to a 13-point lead (45- 32) at halftime. The Wildcats opened the half with a quick burst, cutting the TAMK lead to 48-41 at the 17:47 mark, but the Javelinas answered by pushing the lead back out to 16 points over the next three minutes. The Javelinas' lead grew to as large as 21 points on two occasions before they settled for the 14-point win. The Lady Javelinas led throughout much of the first half, taking as much as a seven-point lead at 24-17 with 10:02 left in the first half. ACU, though, went on an 8-0 run that was sparked by a Jaymie Harner 3-pointer and an Ashlee Barr jumper. ACU eventually rallied to take a 41-39 halftime lead.

Although Carlisle was in his \"back yard\" across the river, [Jim Schaaf] said he never thought about moving there until Carlisle Fire Chief Greg Wallace helped him find temporary quarters. For the past nine months, [Vork] has operated from the old Cast Plus building on Industry Drive in Carlisle. Because of the land needed for a new facility, Schaaf began looking around Carlisle to see what the town offered. Dan Fraazee of Mason will represent the consumer sector in Warren County, while Diana Martin of OfficeTeam of Fairfield and Sharonville will represent the business sector in Butler County.

Carol Bastin, lit three candles on the altar. 9:10 a.m . Cleveland - Tim Hagan, the Democratic candidate for governor, spoke at the opening ceremonies of the Ohio AFL-CIO 23rd Biennial Convention. Hagan spoke of Larry Beck, the brother of his wife's brother-in-law. 10 a.m. Beavercreek - At Fairbrook Elementary School, 11-year- old Alex Foster had a special hero in mind when he joined a student assembly. \"I'm proud of my dad. He's a firefighter,\" Foster said. \"He'd run right into a burning building to save someone.\"
