IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: 'AMISH IN THE CITY', Call it 'boring on the tube'
[Howie Daub] says: Well I'm glad Amish Randy spoke two sentences in this episode, which I believe brings his total for the season to about three. Mose is the only person you can actually believe is Amish. Mose also has an uncanny ability to talk like a robot. Anyway, could they have picked a more boring cast for the \"city\" kids? I am starting to believe city girl Ariel acts more Amish than most of the actual Amish kids. The only fitting sequel to this show would be moving city kids into Amish homes. But I guess Paris and Nicole already took that idea! There are religious reasons the Amish don't watch TV; then there are other reasons, like UPN. In this show, the Amish are interesting to watch and listen to, but the city kids are so irritating, they kill the momentum and turn the show into \"The Real World.\" I'm waiting for UPN to announce the sequel, \"Watch six posh L.A. 20- somethings turn up the heat on Antarctica!! Check your local listings!\"
IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: SUMMER TV, Beating the rerun blues
Pick: \"World Series of Poker\" (ESPN, Tuesday, 9 p.m.) Though it doesn't have the strip clubs, the \"World Series of Poker\" at least captures the second best part of Vegas: gambling. It's also got guys with mullets popping out of 10-gallon hats, smoking unlit cigarettes and wearing sunglasses stolen from a \"Dukes of Hazzard\" garage sale. But Texas Hold'em poker is easy to learn and become addicted to, and makes for some great TV entertainment. Not to mention a $5 million prize if you win the series. 1) UPN PHOTO - Prime-time \"Girlfriends,\" from left, Persia White, Golden Brooks, Tracee Ellis Ross and Jill Marie Jones, 2) CBS Photo / Tony Esparza - An \"Amazing Race 5\" challenge high over Punta del Este, Uruguay; PHOTOS - 3) [Melissa Elliott]; 4) [Chealynn Feaster]; 5) [Craig McAnally]; 6) [Brian Eschbacher]
IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: 'ALIEN VS. PREDATOR', Call it a monster mishmash
First of all, you don't take two R-rated franchises and make a PG- 13 movie. Second, I paid to see \"Alien vs. Predator,\" not another movie with humans fighting against the creatures. The plot was ridiculous and totally ignored the origins of the characters. Some of the fight scenes were OK, but with the dark picture and jerky camera work, it was hard to see much of anything. Come to think of it, maybe t [Veronica Dagher] says: \"AvP\" is not as bad as you think it's going to be. One billionaire's quest to find an ancient pyramid buried in Antarctica turns into the battle royal between two of the ugliest and juiciest villains of our time. The terror of one of the man- hunting monsters is replaced by a kinder beast that helps save the world. Although the flick is not as satisfying as the original \"Predator\" or as terrifying as the first \"Alien,\" it does a commendable job of combining the two classics. And who ever thought you'd hear humans cheering for a former villain?
IMPULSE, YOUR REVIEWS: COCA-COLA'S C2, It's just halfway all right
Pouring it from the can to the cup, it looks just like regular Coca-Cola. Drinking it, it tastes like regular Coca-Cola with a little less fizz. I like my soda with a lot of sparkle, but if I did a blind taste test, I don't think I would be able to tell the difference between Coca-Cola and C2. C2 is worth the investment for anyone caught up in the carb-counting craze. I'm not a big fan of the low-carb craze to begin with, so the idea of drinking low-carb soda is a little much. C2 is a cross between Coca-Cola and Diet Coke with an added aftertaste that lasts well after you drink it. I don't think I will be making the switch from Diet Coke anytime soon! If you are a regular drinker of Coca- Cola and are watching your carbs, you may want to check it out yourself, but I wouldn't recommend it.
IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: 'JOE SCHMO 2', One mo' schmo: It's a go
[Chealynn Feaster] says: This \"reality\" show is so unreal that it's hard to believe Jane and Joe Schmo are actually thinking they are competing on a reality show. I even recognized a couple of the characters as actors, but I guess that's the whole point of the show - to see how far the actors can go without being exposed. I never watched the Joe Schmo show before, but I might tune in from time to time for a couple of chuckles. \"The Joe Schmo Show\" takes the whole reality show genre and turns it upside down. This show is very funny despite having two unlikable main characters: Tim and Ingrid. The show is saved, however, by its witty premise and the entertaining cast of characters, such as Cammy \"The Moron,\" Rita \"The Drunk\" and TJ \"The Playah.\" 1) SPIKE TV PHOTO/JANET VAN HAM - Ingrid Wiese and Tim Walsh, center, are the unwitting stars of \"Joe Schmo 2.\" PHOTOS - 2) Chealynn Feaster; 3) [Vincent Valdemira], 4) [Todd Silver], 5) [Christine Petralia]; 6) [Brian Eschbacher]
IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: BOARDY BARN, LI's own 'Animal House'
1) Photo-Boardy Barn. 2) [Krista West], 22, Melville. 3) [Megan McAlpine], 25, Hicksville. 4) [Chealynn Feaster], 23, Stony Brook. 5) [Rob DiMartino], 25, Port Jefferson Station. 6) [Joseph Scuderi], 24, Lindenhurst The extremely long line to get in is well worth the wait! How would I describe the Boardy Barn? A crazy mess and I mean that in a good way. The beer is $1 a cup and goes down very easy, so most people have \"had enough\" within an hour of being there. Be sure to wear old clothes and shoes, since you will be dancing through puddles of beer to some great old-school music. And definitely take the train or a taxi!
IMPULSE, YOUR REVIEWS: HIP-HOP CD, D12 gets a C average
The members of D12 are as lyrically talented as their most recognized member Eminem. But just like Eminem, the tone of their CD is rage. Most of their songs feel very dark and angry. Their talent could mistakenly go unheard because of all the cursing and gunshots throughout the songs. I don't know when I would ever feel motivated to listen to this CD again. 1) INTERSCOPE / J. MANNION - D12 includes from left, Bizarre, Eminem, Kon Artis, Proof, Kuniva and Swift; 2) [Joseph O'Brien]; 3) [Julie Kanfer]; 4) [Eric Hogan]; 5) [Claudia Ambros]; 6) [Chealynn Feaster]
IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: 'THE STEPFORD WIVES', Bring a date to 'Wives'
\"The Stepford Wives\" is amusing. The film attempts to make a sharp commentary on the take-no-prisoners mentality of the Manhattan world vs. the supposedly ideal suburban life of beauty. The film's stark contrast between two lifestyles - the career track and the Mommy track - shows the extreme of the choices women make today. [Aleatra Rodriguez] says: You already know what I'm going to say ... cute date night movie, a modern update on an old cult hit, great cast, blah, blah, blah. Glenn Close, Chris Walken and Bette Midler steal it - and that's just the supporting cast. Yet despite its shining stars, this film was a bit lackluster. I remember the first words I said walking out of the theater - \"Eh, it was pretty good.\" Something was just missing and I can't quite put my finger on it. Wait for the DVD to figure it out for yourself.
IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: 'BEST WEEK EVER', Totally p.c. (pop culture)
While I loved all of the \"I Love the '80s\" episodes on VH1, the network is reaching new lows with \"Best Week Ever.\" How can every week be the best ever? The show reviewed Thursday's \"Friends\" finale, jumped back to Sunday's \"Sopranos\" episode, then ahead to Thursday again, then went back in time again to Wednesday's \"O.C.\" I'd much rather watch \"E! News Live\" every night to get my daily gossip than to sit through C-listers commenting on Britney's latest love or the [Olsen] twins finally making a feature film. 1) Photo-Modern Humorists Michael Colton, left, and John Aboud are regulars on VH1's \"Best Week Ever.\" Photos-3) [Julie Kanfer], 22, Manhattan. 4) [Chealynn Feaster], 23, Stony Brook. 5) [Brendan McGinn], 26, Elmhurst. 6) [Joan Williams], 23, Cambria Heights. 7) Christine Petralla, 22, St. James. 8) [Shelby Bloom], 22, Manhattan and Greenlawn.
IMPULSE, YOU REVIEW: WHISKEY, Intoxicatingly intimate
If you're into a more \"intimate\" environment, then Whiskey is for you. The cover was cheap, the drinks reasonably priced, the sound system intense and the eye candy plentiful, but the place was too small for me. If you like clubs but don't like a huge place, Whiskey may be more to your liking. As soon as you step in, the unique, futuristic decor and lighting put you in the chill-out, lounge mood while the music instantly makes you want to dance. Whiskey is a good place for a date or a night out with the girls. Everything was on point from the music to the friendly bartenders. Not too many people were there, but Whiskey has the potential to become the Saturday night hot spot. PHOTOS - 1) [Claudia Ambros]; 2) [Rob Ver Straten]; 3) [Joseph Scuderi]; 4) [Aleatra Rodriguez]; 5) [Chealynn Feaster]; 6) Whiskey
