A growing body of research focus on subjective well-being (SWB) in adolescence; however there are few studies focus specifically on the residential care population and even fewer on differences by type of residential facility separately for males and females. This study aims to analyze SWB in therapeutic residential care (a residential program created to address youths with severe emotional and behavioral problems) in relation to young people in other kinds of residential child care (RCC). 567 adolescents aged 14-18 from Therapeutic Residential Care (TRC) (
n
=256) and RCC (
n
=311) participated in the study. Results showed few significant differences concerning the residential program factor. Satisfaction with their own family was greater for young people in TRC and satisfaction, both with the groups they belong to and with their own residential facility, rated higher among the RCC group. Regarding differences by sex, females reported less SWB in all the domains including overall life satisfaction. The effect of the interaction between sex and type of residential program showed that females in TRC reported SWB, particularly low. The main implications for research and intervention will be discussed.

Therapeutic Residential Care For Children and Youth takes a fresh look at therapeutic residential care as a powerful intervention in working with the most troubled children who need intensive support. Featuring contributions from distinguished international contributors, it critically examines current research and innovative practice and addresses the key questions: how does it work, what are its critical \"active ingredients\" and does it represent value for money? The book covers a broad spectrum of established and emerging approaches pioneered around with world, with contributors from the USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Spain, Australia, Israel and the UK offering a mix of practice and research exemplars. The book also looks at the research relating to critical issues for child welfare service providers: the best time to refer children to residential care, how children can be helped to make the transition into care, the characteristics of children entering and exiting care, strategies for engaging families as partners, how the substantial cost of providing intensive is best measured against outcomes, and what research and development challenges will allow therapeutic residential care to be rigorously compared with its evidence-based community-centered alternatives. Importantly, the volume also outlines how to set up and implement intensive child welfare services, considering how transferable they are, how to measure success and value for money, and the training protocols and staffing needed to ensure that a programme is effective. This comprehensive volume will enable child welfare professionals, researchers and policymakers to develop a refined understanding of the potential of therapeutic residential care, and to identify the highest and best uses of this intensive and specialized intervention.
EVALUACIÓN DE LA INTEGRACIÓN SOCIAL EN ACOGIMIENTO RESIDENCIAL
2001
Social integration evaluation in residential child care. Since the eighties there have been remarkable changes in Spanish residential child care. A great effort was devoted on restructuring old institutions into children homes where intervention programs based on children needs have been developed. Two decades afterwards, the need of evaluating residential care programs has been recognised, in order to be able to make sure that an adequate and quality service is being given to all children who need be attended in residential care. In this research we have used an outcomes evaluation design with the aim of analysing how some variables of the cases are related to the level obtained in individual intervention objectives.

2024
Young people´s perspectives on service quality in Therapeutic Residential Care (TRC) are commonly excluded or overshadowed by those of adults which has led to calls for better youth self-report indicators of quality healthcare. In response, we performed a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature to identify the most important quality indicators for young people by reviewing the literature on their beliefs and experiences regarding TRC and building on the four-pronged parsimonious framework (setting, staffing, treatment approach, and safety) proposed by Farmer et al., (2017). Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search was conducted in March 2022. Of the 17, 815 records screened, 15 articles, composed of 15 samples were included. A total of five domains and 13 quality indicators were identified: 1) Setting; 2) Staffing (professional skills and access to specialist support [doctor/therapist]); 3) Treatment approach (effective transition and aftercare support, rest and time to think, life skills, behavioural improvement, access to education and farm animals as therapeutic aides); 4) Safety (staff actions and structure and stability), and 5) Milieu factor (trusting relationships, family involvement, and relationship continuity). These four domains provide a practical framework for better-oriented treatment. The additional domain identified as the milieu factor places the critical quality indicators of TRC (e.g., trusting relationships) from the perception of the youth themselves, at the centre of attention, and encourages services to assess the extent to which they have the milieu factor, so they can strategically adapt and be responsive to the needs of young people. Policy and service delivery implications are discussed.

Traditional assessment versus authentic assessment. During last years, new trends on evaluation have appeared on educational context. These new alternatives pretend to replace traditional assessment based on standarized tests. In USA, standarized tests have been nearly the only way to assess academic performance during last decades, in fact, an only test was enough to decide educational and labour opportunities of a person. This kind of evaluation has received many criticisms by researchers and teachers, who think this model does not detect real learning. The term authentic assessment gathers some alternatives to assess people by a different way. People are asked for constructing their responses in a significant context. These assessments remark not only result but process too.

Social support networks of adolescents in residential child care. A comparative analysis with normative population. There are many researches on the theme of social support, what reveals the large interest around this concept. Its effects on health are well known, although specific mechanisms relating social support and health are still being investigated. The aim of this study is analysing structure (size and composition) and three functional dimensions (confidence, instrumental help and affection) of adolescent’s social support networks in residential child care. The kind of social support provided by different people of their networks (father, mother, brothers, care workers, friends, etc.) is analysed by means of a social support questionnaire. The same questionnaire was applied in a large sample of adolescents from general population, who do not have any relation with Child Welfare services, in order to compare results between both groups.
