A Celebration of Sheffield Steel
2024
The June 7, 2024 marked the beginning of Gerver's favorite weekend of the year -- just don't tell his family! They are undeniably living in continually challenging times, and education is certainly in a difficult place. They hope that new government may constitute change and opportunity, but the reality is, it is going to take time and there will definitely not be any quick fixes. Despite this, he arrived at the Mercure hotel, in Sheffield city center, to be greeted by the smiling faces and bright T-shirts of their wonderful SLA team. He dropped off his bag at the desk and headed down the stairs towards the noise and hubbub. He hadn't had an easy week to be honest, but as soon as he entered the exhibition area, his mood lifted. He wanted to thank the exhibitors for coming and for supporting their conference. Without exception, the response was similar, summed up by one exhibitor who exclaimed, 'No problem, they love it here, best conference they get to attend. There is so much positivity, comradery, and passion.'

Creating tomorrow's schools today : education - our children - their futures
Education is the platform for our success or failure. Is our system still fit for purpose? This study examines this and other key questions in the primary education environment.
2024: The Year of Populism, Elections, Education & Our Children's Futures
2024
Gerver explains how important it is to focus on the future of education. Educators and Government were looking at the future of education and how the system could best meet the needs of an increasingly uncertain and changeable future. Thanks to the work of global experts like Sir Ken Robinson, the author of the 1999, All Our Futures report, the vision was focused, inclusive, and driven by the challenges of tomorrow. The group involved in that report were diverse and included Nobel Prize-winning scientists and economists, highly respected experts from the cultural and arts sector, educators, and policy makers. Together, they explored how education could evolve, and whilst not providing a conclusive answer, it was the catalyst for the constructive pathway that followed. There is a need to have a thoughtful conversation about education, with long-term aims and progress.

We Need to Burn Bright, Not Burn Our Books
2024
Gerver shares his early memories of the school library and the safe haven it provided, emphasizing how important it is that children today have access to these 'dream factories'. Our schools are oases for so many of our children. Education cannot just be about the mechanistic process of memory; it needs to be driven by helping our young to dream and then to convert those dreams into aspirations: ladders of skills and knowledge that allow their dreams to become tangible, attainable. Education needs to be about empowerment, about the celebration of opportunity for all. We need to use education to fight ignorance, manipulation, and powerlessness. All children everywhere must have access to the dream factories that are our libraries. They need to see the beauty of what could be and how it could be theirs. There is a reason why dictators burn books and censor what people can and can't have access to, and that should be the most powerful incentive we need to do everything we can to ensure that our children don't just survive in their future but thrive in it.
