Overview
Gerver shares his early memories of the school library and the safe haven it provided, emphasizing how important it is that children today have access to these 'dream factories'. Our schools are oases for so many of our children. Education cannot just be about the mechanistic process of memory; it needs to be driven by helping our young to dream and then to convert those dreams into aspirations: ladders of skills and knowledge that allow their dreams to become tangible, attainable. Education needs to be about empowerment, about the celebration of opportunity for all. We need to use education to fight ignorance, manipulation, and powerlessness. All children everywhere must have access to the dream factories that are our libraries. They need to see the beauty of what could be and how it could be theirs. There is a reason why dictators burn books and censor what people can and can't have access to, and that should be the most powerful incentive we need to do everything we can to ensure that our children don't just survive in their future but thrive in it.
