How is Arizona Revised Statute: 15.756.01: Structured English Immersion for English Language Learners being implemented within and across classrooms?
2009
In September 2006, the Arizona State Legislature passed House Bill 2064, an act including Arizona Revised Statute (ARS): 15.756.01: Structured English Immersion for English Language Learners. The statute created the English Language Learner Task Force in the Arizona State Department of Education. It was charged with creating Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Models for use in all public schools in the state. A provision of the law is the requirement of a four-hour English Language Development (ELD) block for all students not reaching English proficiency as measured by the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment. A goal of the approved models was for students to reach proficiency in a period of time not to exceed one year. This paper explores the implementation of a Professional Learning Community of ELD teachers in an Arizona elementary school amidst the state's monitoring of ARS: 15.756.01. Both teacher efficacy and attitudes toward English Language Learners (ELL) and the English Language Development criteria are examined using surveys before and alter the action. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed to measure any changes in efficacy and teacher attitudes across the study. Quantitative data results indicate no significant increase in teacher efficacy scores and attitude scales but results of qualitative data indicate change. The focus of this study was to provide a place for the ELD teachers to dialogue about their craft in a safe environment and to receive appropriate SEI professional development opportunities. Classroom observations were used to gather information on the type of instruction occurring during the ELD block. Finally, suggestions to mitigate implications of the law are discussed.

An examination of the self -regulation strategies used by adolescent instrumental musicians while practicing
2004
Individual music practice is a vital aspect of a student's development as a musician. Research indicates that expert music performers utilize substantial planning and a systematic approach to practice sessions, including problem identification, strategy planning and evaluation (Hallam, 2001), all of which are components of self-regulated thinking. The purpose of this study was to discover what self-regulating strategies adolescent instrumental musicians used during music practice. Sixteen middle school instrumental musicians were videotaped as they practiced a new musical selection for 12 minutes. During the practice session they were asked to talk aloud explaining what strategies they were using as they practiced the piece. Immediately following the practice session, the student and researcher viewed the videotape, and an audiotape recording was made as the student explained the strategies used during the previous practice session. The concurrent verbal report from the practice session and retrospective verbal report were transcribed. Examination of these data revealed a variety of categories of strategies referred to by the student musicians. The music practice data were examined to determine what self-regulating strategies students used during the music practice session. Twenty-five types of strategies were referred to during the verbal reports. These types of strategies were found to fall into four categories of strategies: repetition, musical elements, non-specific task and non-playing. The concurrent verbal reports contained statements regarding repetition in 52.7% of the statements. The retrospective verbal reports contained statements regarding musical elements in 39.7% of the statements and repetition in 29.3% of the statement. The music practice data revealed 15 types of self-regulating strategies. Repetition was used in 86.7% of the instances during the music practice sessions. It is hoped that a better understanding of the self-regulation capabilities of student musicians will aid in more effective and successful music teaching and learning.

COVID-19 forced the implementation of restrictive measures in Spain, such as lockdown, home confinement, social distancing, and isolation. It is necessary to study whether limited access to basic services and decreased family and social support could have deleterious effects on cognition, quality of life, and mental health in vulnerable older people.
This study aims to explore the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on cognition in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or dementia as the main outcome and the quality of life, perceived health status, and depression as secondary outcomes and to analyze the association of living alone and a change in living arrangements with those outcomes and other variables related with the use of technology and health services. Likewise, this study aims to analyze the association of high and low technophilia with those variables, to explore the access and use of health care and social support services, and, finally, to explore the informative-, cognitive-, entertainment-, and socialization-related uses of information and communications technologies (ICTs) during the COVID-19 outbreak.
This cohort study was conducted in Málaga (Spain). In total, 151 participants with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia, from the SMART4MD (n=75, 49.7%) and TV-AssistDem (n=76, 50.3%) randomized clinical trials, were interviewed by telephone between May 11 and June 26, 2020. All participants had undergone 1-3 assessments (in 6-month intervals) on cognition, quality of life, and mood prior to the COVID-19 breakout.
The outbreak did not significantly impact the cognition, quality of life, and mood of our study population when making comparisons with baseline assessments prior to the outbreak. Perceived stress was reported as moderate during the outbreak. After correction for multiple comparisons, living alone, a change in living arrangements, and technophilia were not associated with negative mental health outcomes. However, being alone was nominally associated with self-perceived fear and depression, and higher technophilia with better quality of life, less boredom, perceived stress and depression, and also less calmness. Overall, health care and social support service access and utilization were high. The most used ICTs during the COVID-19 outbreak were the television for informative, cognitive, and entertainment-related uses and the smartphone for socialization.
Our findings show that the first months of the outbreak did not significantly impact the cognition, quality of life, perceived health status, and depression of our study population when making comparisons with baseline assessments prior to the outbreak. Living alone and low technophilia require further research to establish whether they are risk factors of mental health problems during lockdowns in vulnerable populations. Moreover, although ICTs have proven to be useful for informative-, cognitive-, entertainment-, and socialization-related uses during the pandemic, more evidence is needed to support these interventions.

Treatment with single agent immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has tremendously changed second line therapy in NSCLC. However, there are still no reliable biomarkers predicting response and survival in this group of patients. PD-L1 revealed to be a correlating, but no perfect marker. Therefore, we sought to investigate in this prospective study, whether inflammation status and cytokine profile could serve as additional biomarkers guiding treatment decision for single agent ICIs in NSCLC. 29 stage IV NSCLC patients receiving single agent PD-1 checkpoint-inhibitor in second line were prospectively enrolled. Inflammatory scores and cytokine profiles (IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IFN-γ and TNFα) have been obtained before treatment and at the time of the first staging. Cytokine profiles were correlated with response and survival. Patients with signs of pre-therapeutic inflammation (elevated, NLR, SII, IL-6, IL-8) showed significantly lower response to ICI treatment and reduced PFS. Contrary, elevated levels of IFN-γ revealed to characterize a subgroup of patients, who significantly benefits from ICI treatment. Furthermore, low systemic inflammation and high levels of IFN-γ characterized patients with long term-response to ICI treatment. Pre-therapeutic assessment of inflammation and cytokine profiles has the ability to predict response and survival in NSCLC patients treated with single agent ICIs.

White adipose tissue (AT) dysfunction plays an important role in the development of cardiometabolic alterations associated with obesity. AT dysfunction is characterized by the loss of the expansion capacity of the AT, an increment in adipocyte hypertrophy, and changes in the secretion profile of adipose cells, associated with accumulation of macrophages and inflammation. Since not all people with an excess of adiposity develop comorbidities, it is necessary to find simple tools that can evidence AT dysfunction and allow the detection of those people with the potential to develop metabolic alterations. This review focuses on the current pathophysiological mechanisms of white AT dysfunction and emerging measurements to assess its functionality.
