An evaporite sequence from ancient brine recorded in Bennu samples
2025
Evaporation or freezing of water-rich fluids with dilute concentrations of dissolved salts can produce brines, as observed in closed basins on Earth

and detected by remote sensing on icy bodies in the outer Solar System

. The mineralogical evolution of these brines is well understood in regard to terrestrial environments
4
, but poorly constrained for extraterrestrial systems owing to a lack of direct sampling. Here we report the occurrence of salt minerals in samples of the asteroid (101955) Bennu returned by the OSIRIS-REx mission

. These include sodium-bearing phosphates and sodium-rich carbonates, sulfates, chlorides and fluorides formed during evaporation of a late-stage brine that existed early in the history of Bennu’s parent body. Discovery of diverse salts would not be possible without mission sample return and careful curation and storage, because these decompose with prolonged exposure to Earth’s atmosphere. Similar brines probably still occur in the interior of icy bodies Ceres and Enceladus, as indicated by spectra or measurement of sodium carbonate on the surface or in plumes

Millimeter-scale layered MoSe2 grown on sapphire and evidence for negative magnetoresistance
2017
Molecular beam epitaxy technique has been used to deposit a single layer and a bilayer of MoSe 2 on sapphire. Extensive characterizations including in-situ and ex-situ measurements show that the layered MoSe 2 grows in a scalable manner on the substrate and reveals characteristics of a stoichiometric 2H-phase. The layered MoSe 2 exhibits polycrystalline features with domains separated by defects and boundaries. Temperature and magnetic field dependent resistivity measurements unveil a carrier hopping character described within two-dimensional variable range hopping mechanism. Moreover, a negative magnetoresistance was observed, stressing a fascinating feature of the charge transport under the application of a magnetic field in the layered MoSe 2 system. This negative magnetoresistance observed at millimeter-scale is similar to that observed recently at room temperature inWS2 flakes at a micrometer scale [Zhang et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 108, 153114 (2016)]. This scalability highlights the fact that the underlying physical mechanism is intrinsic to these two-dimensional materials and occurs at very short scale.
Systemic inflammatory markers in older persons: the effect of oral nutritional supplementation with prebiotics
2007
To evaluate the effect of oral nutritional supplementation with and without oligosaccharides on gut bacteriology, in particular the bifidogenic flora, and on immunology and inflammatory parameters in older persons at risk of malnutrition.
Prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled study.
Division of Geriatric Medicine, St. Louis University, Missouri, United States.
Seventy-four community dwelling elderly and/or nursing home subjects (age superior 70 y; 84 +/- 7 years) either undernourished or at risk of undernutrition.
Daily liquid supplements, with (1.3 g/250 ml) and without oligosaccharides (OS) for 12 weeks.
Nutritional evaluation, serum immunoglobulins, lymphocyte subsets, various cytokines and the endotoxin soluble receptor CD14 (sCD14) in serum, and cytokines specific mRNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells at baseline and 12 weeks, and fecal bacteriologicy.
Specific mRNA extracted from blood leucocytes showed a different level of pro-inflammatory gene activation: TNF-alpha mRNA and IL-6 mRNA diminished in the OS group after 12 weeks, while no changes were detected in the control group (P=0.05 and P=0.04 respectively). Serum levels of sCD14, a product shed by activated macrophages, decreased only in the OS group without reaching statistical significance (P=0.08). No significant differences were detected in the fecal gut flora or in the nutritional parameters.
This study shows that the administration of supplements in older persons at risk of malnutrition may benefit from the addition of prebiotics that can improve the low noise inflammatory process frequently observed in this population.

An interoperable web portal for parallel geoprocessing of satellite image vegetation indices
2015
The main objective of this paper is to introduce a portal of geoprocessing services that can be used to compute either a single vegetation index or a combination of vegetation indices, as a workflow. High Performance Computing (HPC) resources are used for the calculations, and the Web Processing Service (WPS) standard is used to handle the requests from and the responses to the portal. In case of a workflow, a single node of the cluster is dedicated to each index, and the number of used cores depends on the complexity of the task. In addition, based on a series of experiments made to accelerate remote sensing image processing, a parallelization method within the computational node is automatically chosen depending on the complexity of the operations and the amount of data. The suggested algorithm optimizes the processing by selecting the best methodology (serial or parallel) and the number of cores to efficiently manipulate and distribute the data. The interoperable web portal, Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and the heterogeneous resources of HPC cluster are located in the same local area network, and the cluster nodes have access to the data via network file system sharing. The use of standardized web services makes it possible to use remote data as inputs.
