Identification of Theileria spp. and investigation of hematological profiles of their infections in goats in Hainan Island, China
Theileria spp. are a group of parasites primarily transmitted by ticks and can pose a significant threat to domestic and wild animals globally. The main objective of this study was to understand the epidemiology of Theileria spp. in goats of Hainan Island/province, which is the only tropical region of China, and to study their hematological profiles in naturally infected goats. A total of 464 blood samples were collected from randomly selected local adult goats ( Capra hircus , local domestic breed with black hair), from six cities and eight counties of Hainan, from November 2017 to October 2020. Blood smear microscopy of the sample and a nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) targeting the 18S rRNA gene combined with DNA sequencing were used to detect piroplasm infections in goats. Data analysis of the obtained sequences revealed that all the sequences were highly similar to the Theileria luwenshuni 18S rRNA gene sequence from the database. This result is consistent with the microscopic examination. In the hematological test, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin of the goats naturally infected with T. luwenshuni significantly increased, while mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) were significantly decreased. Results showed that T. luwenshuni could cause macrocytic, hypochromic anemia in goats. This study provides reliable and comprehensive information about the epidemiology of the parasite infections and hematological profile of the infected goats in Hainan, which encourages further investigations to develop practical control strategies for Theileria spp. infections in tropical areas. Les Theileria spp. sont un groupe de parasites principalement transmis par les tiques qui peuvent constituer une menace importante pour les animaux domestiques et sauvages dans le monde. L’objectif principal de cette étude était de comprendre l’épidémiologie de Theileria spp. chez les chèvres de l’île/province de Hainan, qui est la seule région tropicale de Chine et étudier les profils hématologiques des chèvres naturellement infectées. 464 échantillons de sang ont été prélevés sur des chèvres adultes locales sélectionnées au hasard ( Capra hircus , race domestique locale à poils noirs), dans 6 villes et 8 comtés de Hainan, de novembre 2017 à octobre 2020. L’étude microscopique du frottis sanguin de l’échantillon et la réaction en chaîne par polymérase nichée (nPCR) ciblant le gène de l’ARNr 18S combinée au séquençage de l’ADN ont été utilisées pour détecter les infections à piroplasmes chez les chèvres. L’analyse des séquences obtenues a révélé que toutes les séquences étaient très similaires à la séquence du gène de l’ARNr 18S de T. luwenshuni de la base de données. Le résultat est cohérent avec l’examen microscopique. Dans le test hématologique, l’hématocrite, le volume corpusculaire moyen et l’hémoglobine corpusculaire moyenne des chèvres naturellement infectées par T. luwenshuni ont augmenté de manière significative, tandis que la concentration moyenne d’hémoglobine corpusculaire et la largeur de distribution des globules rouges (RDW) ont été significativement diminuées. Les résultats ont montré que T. luwenshuni pouvait provoquer une anémie macrocytaire et une anémie hypochrome chez les chèvres. Cette étude fournit des informations fiables et complètes sur l’épidémiologie des infections parasitaires et le profil hématologique des chèvres infectées à Hainan, ce qui encourage des investigations supplémentaires pour développer des stratégies pratiques de contrôle des infections par Theileria spp. dans les zones tropicales.
Evaluation of therapeutic effects of .sup.125I particles brachytherapy for recurrent bladder cancer
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical value of [.sup.125]I particles implantation in the treatment of recurrent bladder cancer. The study is a retrospective analysis of 32 patients with recurrent bladder cancer treated between May 2010 and January 2010. Of these, 16 cases (chemotherapy group) received conventional chemotherapy. A total of 16 patients ([.sup.125]I group) received radiotherapy with [.sup.125]I particles, followed by conventional chemotherapy. By guidance of B ultrasound, [.sup.125]I radioactive particles were implanted. All 32 patients were relieved after treatment, and the tumors were significantly reduced after 2 months. However, the tumors in the [.sup.125]I group were significantly smaller than those in the chemotherapy group (P<0.05). The patients were followed-up for 1 year and no recurrence was found. Additionally, no complications occurred. Compared with the chemotherapy group, the tumor volume of the [.sup.125]I group was significantly reduced (P<0.05). The disease-free survival and 5-year survival rates of the patients in the follow-up showed that the disease-free survival and 5-year survival rates of the patients in [.sup.125]I group were significantly improved compared to those in the chemotherapy group. Therefore, the results have shown that [.sup.125]I radioactive particles in the treatment of bladder cancer improve the symptoms of patients with bladder cancer in the short term, and continuously kill residual tumor and prevent recurrence. Robustness of critical points in a complex adaptive system: Effects of hedge behavior
In our recent papers, we have identified a class of phase transitions in the market-directed resource- allocation game, and found that there exists a critical point at which the phase transitions occur. The critical point is given by a certain resource ratio. Here, by performing computer simulations and theoretical analysis, we report that the critical point is robust against various kinds of human hedge behavior where the numbers of herds and contrarians can be varied widely. This means that the critical point can be independent of the total number of participants composed of normal agents, herds and contrarians, under some conditions. This finding means that the critical points we identified in this complex adaptive system (with adaptive agents) may also be an intensive quantity, similar to those revealed in traditional physical systems (with non-adaptive units).
The Vision Orientation System Based on OpenCV of the Glass Curtain Wall Cleaning Robot
This paper proposes a vision orientation system based on OpenCV to solve the orientation problem that glass curtain wall cleaning robots meet with at work. The system applies edge detection and the Hough transform to the images captured by the monocular camera, then judges whether the robot has reached glass edges according to the results of histogram comparison between the target image and the template image. Finally the system sends corresponding orders to the robot for path selection and orientation.
Intelligent Prediction for Distortion of Weak Surrounding Rock in Tunnel
In order to remove the hidden danger resulted by distortion of weak surrounding rock in tunnel, the GM(1,1) of the distortion data of weak surrounding rock is used to predict the distortion trend of weak rock vault in the next phase. According to the actual data, a GM(1,1) of the distortion is built, and it is shown that the predict result of GM(1, 1) is accurate, and the calamity can be reduced by the way.
Progress in physical properties of Chinese stock markets
In the past two decades, statistical physics was brought into the field of finance, applying new methods and concepts to financial time series and developing a new interdiscipline "econophysics". In this review, we introduce several commonly used methods for stock time series in econophysics including distribution functions, correlation functions, detrended fluctuation analysis method, de- trended moving average method, and multifractal analysis. Then based on these methods, we review some statistical properties of Chinese stock markets including scaling behavior, long-term correla- tions, cross-correlations, leverage effects, antileverage effects, and multifractality. Last, based on an agent-based model, we develop a new option pricing model -- financial market model that shows a good agreement with the prices using real Shanghai Index data. This review is helpful for people to understand and research statistical physics of financial markets.
Comparative Analysis of CRD Method and Three-Bench Method with Temporary Invert
CRD method and three-bench method with temporary invert, which are applied to shallow buried and large cross-section tunnel engineering, are discussed, and simulated by FLAC2D so as to study the variation feature of displacement field, surrounding rock disturbance and internal supporting force caused by the excavation. According to the simulation results, it is proved that CRD method, with higher safety, can control tunnel collapse effectively while three-bench method quickens construction schedule. Therefore, it is recommended that the two methods are used for excavating tunnels alternately if possible so that it will increase economic benefit.
Reproductive management through integration of PGD and MPS-based noninvasive prenatal screening/diagnosis for a family with GJB2-associated hearing impairment
A couple with a proband child of GJB2 (encoding the gap junction protein connexin 26)-associated hearing impairment and a previous pregnancy miscarriage sought for a reproductive solution to bear a healthy child. Our study aimed to develop a cus- tomized preconception-to-neonate care trajectory to fulfill this clinical demand by integrating preimplantation genetic diagno- sis (PGD), noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT), and noninvasive prenatal diagnosis (N1PD) into the strategy. Auditory and ge- netic diagnosis of the proband child was carried out to identify the disease causative mutations. The couple then received in-vitro-fertilization treatment, and eight embryos were obtained for day 5 biopsy. PGD was performed by short-tandem-repeat linkage analysis and Sanger sequencing of GJB2 gene. Transfer of a GJB2c.235delC heterozygous embryo resulted in a sin- gleton pregnancy. At the 13th week of gestation, genomic DNA (gDNA) from the trio family and cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from maternal plasma were obtained for assessment of fetal chromosomal aneuploidy and GJB2 mutations. NIPT and NIPD showed the absence of chromosomal aneuploidy and GJB2-associated disease in the fetus, which was later confirmed by inva- sire procedures and postnatal genetic/auditory diagnosis. This strategy successfully prevented the transmission of hearing im- pairment in the newborn, thus providing a valuable experience in reproductive management of similar cases and potentially other monogenic disorders.
