Forecasting and Management of Technology, Second Edition
Published in 1991, the first edition of Forecasting and Management of Technology was one of the leading handful of books to deal with the topic of forecasting of technology and technology management as this discipline was emerging. Burton Banks is a former associative professor of family medicine at East Tennessee State University. His clinical interests include children's health and care of child abuse victims. DOES HYPERBARIC OXYGEN EXPOSURE AFFECT HIGH-INTENSITY, SHORT-DURATION EXERCISE PERFORMANCE?
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) exposure involves the breathing of 100% oxygen under conditions of elevated atmospheric pressure and is used to increase the oxygen content of the plasma fraction of arterial blood. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of acute HBO exposure on selected physiological responses and performance in response to maximal lower extremity or upper extremity short-term, high-intensity exercise. The study was performed with 2 separate experiments incorporating double-blinded and randomized protocols. In experiment 1, 9 subjects ran on a treadmill at a speed of 268 m·min with a predetermined grade. In experiment 2, 9 different subjects performed a repetitive bench press exercise. Both exercise protocols were designed to induce fatigue within 1–2 minutes. Within each experiment, subjects received either a 1-hour HBO exposure inspiring 100% O2 at 202.6 kPa (2.0 atmospheres absolute pressure [ATA]) or a 1-hour sham exposure inspiring ambient air at 121.5 kPa (1.2 ATA) before exercise. No significant differences (p ≥ 0.05) were observed in postexercise blood lactate concentrations, peak heart rate, ratings of perceived exertion, or performance as determined by treadmill running time or number of completed lifts. Unlike other methods that elevate oxygen content of the blood, acute HBO exposure appears to have no significant effect on subsequent high-intensity running or lifting performance.

Enhancing the management of shared inventory in the steel industry using RFID: an alternative to bar codes
An inventory problem of a company that specializes in cutting steel coils into rolls and sheets of steel is addressed in this paper. Rolls and sheets of steel require a high level of customization depending on the specifications by the end user. This causes complexity in the management of finished goods, mainly due to the wide variety of dimensions of the rolls and sheets that are in the storage area. Due to the great variety of products built for stock, it is not possible to define a specific location in the storage area to place a product. For a company located in México, recent data show that the percentage of obsolete inventory (items stored more than 90 days) is 7 %. The objective of this work is to reduce this percentage to 0 %. From a time study, it was learned that searching for finished inventory averaged 15.5 min. This activity consumes a large amount of the available forklift operator time. This means that in situations during which the forklift operator is pressed for time, it may be necessary to abandon the search for the correct finished products in the storage, and instead ship products of more recent production. Over time, the repetition of this event generates increased rates of obsolete inventory. The proposal to solve the problem was to reduce the search times through the implementation of a system that identifies inventory using RFID technology. This will improve the quality of the stored information, and therefore reduce the rate of obsolescence.
Intercultural Skills for an Effective Teamwork in China: The Mexican Experience
The speed of changes in the global business environment has pushed European multinationals to employ staff from its foreign subsidiaries, to take over some corporate activities in a third country. This is the case with Latin American executives working in China, that face not only the culture shock, but are immersed in a complex chain of command between headquarters, subsidiary and host market. This article is part of a wider research on decoding the business environment in China for Latin American executives, based on three areas: communication patterns, negotiation patterns and cultural/interpersonal development.
