Controlling the Polarization State of Light with a Dispersion-Free Metastructure
By combining the advantages of both a metallic metamaterial and a dielectric interlayer, we demonstrate the general mechanism to construct the dispersion-free metastructure, in which the intrinsic dispersion of the metallic structures is perfectly cancelled out by the thickness-dependent dispersion of the dielectric spacing layer. As examples to apply this concept, a broadband quarter-wave plate and a half-wave plate are demonstrated. By selecting the structural parameters, the polarization state of light can be freely tuned across a broad frequency range, and all of the polarization states on the Poincaré sphere can be realized dispersion free.
Health and ecological risk assessment of heavy metals pollution in an antimony mining region: a case study from South China
In recent years, international research on the toxicity of the heavy metal, antimony, has gradually changed focus from early medical and pharmacological toxicology to environmental toxicology and ecotoxicology. However, little research has been conducted for sources identification and risk management of heavy metals pollution by long-term antimony mining activities. In this study, a large number of investigations were conducted on the temporal and spatial distribution of antimony and related heavy metal contaminants (lead, zinc, and arsenic), as well as on the exposure risks for the population for the Yuxi river basin in the Hunan province, China. The scope of the investigations included mine water, waste rock, tailings, agricultural soil, surface water, river sediments, and groundwater sources of drinking water. Health and ecological risks from exposure to heavy metal pollution were evaluated. The main pollution sources of heavy metals in the Yuxi River basin were analyzed. Remediation programs and risk management strategies for heavy metal pollution were consequently proposed. This article provides a scientific basis for the risk assessment and management of heavy metal pollution caused by antimony basin ore mining.
miR-190 suppresses breast cancer metastasis by regulation of TGF-β-induced epithelial–mesenchymal transition
Background Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and metastasis is the leading cause of death among patients with breast cancer. The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) pathway plays critical roles during breast cancer epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) and metastasis. SMAD2, a positive regulator of TGF-β signaling, promotes breast cancer metastasis through induction of EMT. Methods The expression of miR-190 and SMAD2 in breast cancer tissues, adjacent normal breast tissues and cell lines were determined by RT-qPCR. The protein expression levels and localization were analyzed by western blotting and immunofluorescence. ChIP and dual-luciferase report assays were used to validate the regulation of ZEB1-miR-190-SMAD2 axis. The effect of miR-190 on breast cancer progression was investigated both in vitro and in vivo. Results miR-190 down-regulation is required for TGF-β-induced EMT. miR-190 suppresses breast cancer metastasis both in vitro and in vivo by targeting SMAD2. miR-190 expression is down-regulated and inversely correlates with SMAD2 in breast cancer samples, and its expression level was associated with outcome in patients with breast cancer. Furthermore, miR-190 is transcriptionally regulated by ZEB1. Conclusions Our data uncover the ZEB1-miR-190-SMAD2 axis and provide a mechanism to explain the TGF-β network in breast cancer metastasis.
SNHG5 Promotes Breast Cancer Proliferation by Sponging the miR-154-5p/PCNA Axis
Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor and the main cause of cancer-associated mortality in females worldwide. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been reported to play vital roles in breast cancer development and progression; however, our understanding of most lncRNAs in breast cancer is still limited. In this study, we demonstrated that small nucleolar RNA host gene 5 (SNHG5) promotes breast cancer cell proliferation both in vitro and in vivo, and depletion of SNHG5 significantly led to cell-cycle arrest at G1 phase. Accumulating evidence has shown that many lncRNA transcripts could function as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) by competitively binding common microRNAs (miRNAs). We found that SNHG5 acts as a sponge for miR-154-5p, reducing its ability to repress proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). SNHG5 promoted breast cancer proliferation and cell-cycle progression by upregulation of PCNA expression. Clinically, we observed an increased SNHG5 expression in breast cancer, whereas miR-154-5p was decreased in breast cancer tissues compared with the adjacent normal breast tissues. Furthermore, the SNHG5 expression was significantly negatively correlated with miR-154-5p expression. Taken together, our data uncover the SNHG5-miR-154-5p-PCNA axis and provide a novel mechanism to explain breast cancer proliferation. [Display omitted]
Cotreatment of MSWI Fly Ash and Granulated Lead Smelting Slag Using a Geopolymer System
Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) and granulated lead smelting slag (GLSS) are toxic industrial wastes. In the present study, granulated lead smelting slag (GLSS) was pretreated as a geopolymer precursor through the high-energy ball milling activation process, which could be used as a geopolymeric solidification/stabilization (S/S) reagent for MSWI FA. The S/S process has been estimated through the physical properties and heavy metals leachability of the S/S matrices. The results show that the compressive strength of the geopolymer matrix reaches 15.32 MPa after curing for 28 days under the best parameters, and the physical properties meet the requirement of MU10 grade fly ash brick. In addition, the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test results show that arsenic and heavy metals are immobilized effectively in the geopolymer matrix, and their concentrations in the leachate are far below the US EPA TCLP limits. The hydration products of the geopolymer binder are characterized by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared methods. The results show that the geopolymer gel and Friedel’s salt are the main hydration products. The S/S mechanism of the arsenic and heavy metals in the geopolymer matrix mainly involves physical encapsulation of the geopolymer gel, geopolymer adsorption and ion exchange of Friedel’s salt.
miR-190 enhances endocrine therapy sensitivity by regulating SOX9 expression in breast cancer
Background Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and approximately 70% of breast cancers are hormone receptor-positive and express estrogen receptor-α (ERα) or/and progesterone receptor. Therapies targeting ERα have been successfully used in patients with ERα + breast cancer. However, intrinsic or acquired resistance to anti-estrogen therapy presents a major challenge. The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway regulates various processes that are important for cancer progression, and emerging evidences have shown a close interaction between Wnt/β-catenin and ERα signaling. miR-190 is also involved in ER signaling and our previous study indicated that miR-190 suppresses breast cancer metastasis. Methods The effect of miR-190 on breast cancer anti-estrogen sensitivity was investigated both in vitro and in vivo. The protein expression levels and localization were analyzed by western blotting and immunofluorescence, respectively. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and dual-luciferase reporter assays were used to validate the regulation of the zinc-finger E-box binding homeobox 1/ ERα-miR-190-SRY-related high mobility group box 9 (ZEB1/ERα-miR-190-SOX9) axis. Results miR-190 increased the anti-estrogen sensitivity of breast cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. miR-190 inhibited Wnt/β-catenin signaling by targeting SOX9, and its expression inversely correlated with that of SOX9 in breast cancer samples. Furthermore, ERα and ZEB1 competitively regulated miR-190 expression. Conclusions Our data uncover the ZEB1/ERα-miR-190-SOX9 axis and suggest a mechanism by which the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is involved in breast cancer anti-estrogen therapy.
Semantic Segmentation of Satellite Images for Landslide Detection Using Foreground-Aware and Multi-Scale Convolutional Attention Mechanism
Advancements in satellite and aerial imagery technology have made it easier to obtain high-resolution remote sensing images, leading to widespread research and applications in various fields. Remote sensing image semantic segmentation is a crucial task that provides semantic and localization information for target objects. In addition to the large-scale variation issues common in most semantic segmentation datasets, aerial images present unique challenges, including high background complexity and imbalanced foreground–background ratios. However, general semantic segmentation methods primarily address scale variations in natural scenes and often neglect the specific challenges in remote sensing images, such as inadequate foreground modeling. In this paper, we present a foreground-aware remote sensing semantic segmentation model. The model introduces a multi-scale convolutional attention mechanism and utilizes a feature pyramid network architecture to extract multi-scale features, addressing the multi-scale problem. Additionally, we introduce a Foreground–Scene Relation Module to mitigate false alarms. The model enhances the foreground features by modeling the relationship between the foreground and the scene. In the loss function, a Soft Focal Loss is employed to focus on foreground samples during training, alleviating the foreground–background imbalance issue. Experimental results indicate that our proposed method outperforms current state-of-the-art general semantic segmentation methods and transformer-based methods on the LS dataset benchmark.
Exosome-Based Regimen Rescues Endometrial Fibrosis in Intrauterine Adhesions Via Targeting Clinical Fibrosis Biomarkers
Abstract Intrauterine adhesions (IUA), which is characterized by endometrial fibrosis, continue to be the most common cause of uterine infertility globally. Our work revealed that 3 fibrotic progression markers (Vimentin, COL5A2, and COL1A1) were significantly increased in the endometrium of IUA patients. Mesenchymal stem cell–derived exosomes (EXOs) have been recently revealed as a cell-free therapy for fibrosis diseases. Nevertheless, the application of EXOs is restricted by the short residency duration in the target tissue. To overcome this limitation, herein, we reported an exosome–based regimen (EXOs-HP) that thermosensitive poloxamer hydrogel possessed the ability to efficiently promote the residency duration of EXOs in the uterine cavity. By downregulating fibrotic progression markers (Vimentin, COL5A2, and COL1A1), EXOs-HP could significantly restore the function and structure of the injured endometrium in the IUA model. Our work provides the theoretical and experimental foundation of EXOs-HP in treating IUA, highlighting the clinical potential of topical EXOs-HP delivery system in IUA patients. Graphical Abstract In this study, we identified 3 upregulated fibrotic progression markers (Vimentin, COL5A2, and COL1A1) in the endometrium of IUA patients and highlighted the efficacious therapy of EXOs–HP via inhibiting the fibrosis process.
Serum deprivation response inhibits breast cancer progression by blocking transforming growth factor‐β signaling
Serum deprivation response (SDPR), a key substrate for protein kinase C, play a critical role in inducing membrane curvature and participate in the formation of caveolae. However, the function of SDPR in cancer development and progression is still not clear. Here, we found that SDPR is downregulated in human breast cancer. Overexpression of SDPR suppresses cell proliferation and invasion in MDA‐MB‐231 cells, while depletion of SDPR promotes cell proliferation and invasion in MCF10A cells. Subsequently, SDPR depletion induces epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT)‐like phenotype. Finally, knockdown of SDPR activates transforming growth factor‐β (TGF‐β) signaling by upregulation of TGF‐β1 expression. In conclusion, our results showed that SDPR inhibits breast cancer progression by blocking TGF‐β signaling. Serum deprivation response suppresses cell proliferation and invasion in breast cancer cells. SDPR depletion induces epithelial–mesenchymal transition by activation of TGF‐β signaling. SDPR suppresses cell proliferation and invasion in breast cancer cells. SDPR depletion induces epithelial‐mesenchymal transition by activation of TGF‐β signaling.
The Effect of Implementing Mechanical Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Devices on Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Patients in an Urban City of Taiwan
High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a key element in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) resuscitation. Mechanical CPR devices have been developed to provide uninterrupted and high-quality CPR. Although human studies have shown controversial results in favor of mechanical CPR devices, their application in pre-hospital settings continues to increase. There remains scant data on the pre-hospital use of mechanical CPR devices in Asia. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective cohort study between September 2018 and August 2020 in an urban city of Taiwan to analyze the effects of mechanical CPR devices on the outcomes of OHCA; the primary outcome was attainment of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Of 552 patients with OHCA, 279 received mechanical CPR and 273 received manual CPR, before being transferred to the hospital. After multivariate adjustment for the influencing factors, mechanical CPR was independently associated with achievement of any ROSC (OR = 1.871; 95%CI:1.195–2.930) and sustained (≥24 h) ROSC (OR = 2.353; 95%CI:1.427–3.879). Subgroup analyses demonstrated that mechanical CPR is beneficial in shorter emergency medical service response time (≤4 min), witnessed cardiac arrest, and non-shockable cardiac rhythm. These findings support the importance of early EMS activation and high-quality CPR in OHCA resuscitation.
