2022
Aggressiveness is prevalent in old age, and to adapt treatments and diminish the accompanying damage to the self and others, it is important to understand aggressiveness predictors. Poor emotional awareness, impulsivity, and emotion dysregulation are potential mechanisms influencing aggressiveness. The present study examines whether alexithymia, emotion dysregulation, and impulsivity influence aggressiveness in older adults; and whether the effect of alexithymia is conditioned by emotional dysregulation and impulsivity after controlling for probable confounders. The sample consisted of 326 Portuguese older adults (63.2% female) aged 60-96 years from residential care homes and the community. Participants completed report instruments measuring alexithymia, emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and aggressiveness. Results of the mediation analysis showed that older adults who had more alexithymia tended to report higher levels of emotional dysregulation and impulsivity, which in turn accounted for higher reported aggressiveness. All these effects were independent of cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms. This study suggests the relevance of evaluating and intervening on alexithymia, impulsivity, and emotion dysregulation to reducing aggressiveness in older people.

2023
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of antioxidant treatments on the conservation of cut eggplants (Solanum melongena L.), which was carried out in two stages. Initially, the effect of citric acid (CA), ascorbic acid (AA) and cysteine (Cys) solution at 0.5 and 1% on sensory attributes (general appearance and browning), and color parameters during storage were evaluated. Immersion in 1% AA was considered the best antioxidant since it maintained visual quality for 6 days. Subsequently, hot water dipping (HWD) treatments followed by the 1% AA solution were evaluated and optimized through the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Sensory attributes, color parameters, respiration rate (RR), phenolic compounds (PhC), antioxidant capacity, as well as the activity of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) were assessed during cold storage. The results showed that HWD at 50 °C, 60 s and 1% AA was the optimal combination to control enzymatic browning and extend its fresh quality for up to 8 days. Furthermore, that combination of treatments reduced the PPO and POD activities and increased the PhC compared to the control (untreated), not finding significant differences between them in antioxidant capacity and RR. Therefore, the application of this combination would be the most appropriate to preserve the quality of the fresh-cut eggplants for 8 days of storage at 4 °C.

Voices of Adult Latinos with Physical Disabilities and Their Families
2016
The civil rights issue of the twentieth century results from in education inequities individuals with disabilities face as a result of the use of the medical view of disabilities, which removes the accountability off the educator and places it on the individuals. This qualitative multiple case study used critical race theory and disability as a lens for exploring the life and school experiences of Latino individuals with physical disabilities and their parents. All six individuals with physical disabilities participated in a semi-structured interview. Additionally, all six participants took part in follow up interviews once themes began to emerge. Parents of four of the six participants took part in semi-structured interviews. The dominant themes that emerged from the data were themes that emerged were power, self-concept, identity, family, language, meaningful relationships with adults, school setting, teacher knowledge, expectations, attitudes, socialization with peers, and impact of parental advocacy. Recommendations and future research needs are identified.

Abstract This study investigated the performance of children from the Brazilian Northeast region, from 7 to 10 years in phonemic and semantic verbal fluency tasks. The participants were 102 subjects (62 girls and 40 boys) who performed three phonemic and three semantic fluency tasks. The results were submitted to correlational and variance analysis to investigate the influence of the variables age and gender on the subjects performance. There was no effect of gender on the results. Significant contrasts between age groups were found, and better performance was observed on phonemic tasks. Also, the performance in this task changed along development, in contrast to what happened with the semantic fluency. The findings seem to be in accordance to neurodevelopmental aspects, taken into account that explicit memory systems show more precocious maturational course, with earlier consolidation, in comparison to the executive functions and frontal lobes, which go on developing until adult ages. The Role of Environmental Awareness in a Smart Home Context
2020
Environmental sustainability is gathering further importance in a variety of industries, playing an active role in consumer behavior. Our homes are no exception. The use of smart technologies in households, in addition to providing comfort and convenience, is increasingly contributing to a more efficient energy consumption, by granting more control and automation over energy usage. Despite the potential benefits of smart homes and its continuous growth in the market, the adoption rate of such innovative technologies remains lower than expected. This study proposes a theoretical model, based on the extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2), to examine the factors that explain individual intentions and behavior towards smart home technologies.Additionally, the effects of environmental awareness are explored among the target adoption variables of this technology. Data collected from 255 individuals were used to test the research model. The findings demonstrate the significant role of environmental awareness in a smart home context, through direct, mediating and moderating effects, specifically among the variables of behavioral intention, use behavior, and intention to recommend. This study provides meaningful insights for researches, marketers, and policy makers, by exploring determinants of smart home adoption and highlighting newer environmental approaches to these technologies.

Background
Adaptation of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) often occurs when implemented in new local contexts and settings. It is unclear, however, during which phase of implementation adaptations are most frequently made and how these changes may impact the fidelity, effectiveness, and sustainability of the EBI. Pediatric Early Warning Systems (PEWS) are EBIs for early identification of deterioration in hospitalized children with cancer. This study evaluates adaptations of PEWS made among resource-variable pediatric oncology hospitals in Latin America implementing and sustaining PEWS.
Methods
We conducted a cross-sectional survey among pediatric oncology centers participating in Proyecto Escala de Valoración de Alerta Temprana (EVAT), a collaborative to implement PEWS. Adaptations to PEWS were assessed via 3 multiple choice and 1 free text question administered as part of a larger study of PEWS sustainability. Descriptive statistics quantitatively described what, when, and why adaptations were made. Qualitative analysis of free text responses applied the Framework for Reporting Adaptations and Modifications Expanded (FRAME) to describe respondent perspectives on PEWS adaptations.
Results
We analyzed 2,094 responses from 58 pediatric oncology centers across 19 countries in Latin America. Participants were predominantly female (82.5%), consisting of nurses (57.4%) and physicians (38.2%) who were PEWS implementation leaders (22.1%) or clinical staff (69.1%). Respondents described multiple PEWS adaptations across all implementation phases, with most occurring during the planning and piloting of EBIs. Adaptations included changes to PEWS content (algorithm, scoring tool, terminology, and use frequency) and context (personnel delivering or population). Respondents felt adaptations streamlined monitoring, enhanced effectiveness, improved workflow, increased comprehension, and addressed local resource limitations. Qualitative analysis indicated that most adaptations were categorized as fidelity consistent and planned; fidelity inconsistent adaptations were unplanned responses to unanticipated challenges.
Conclusion
Adaptations made to PEWS across implementation phases demonstrate how EBIs are adapted to fit dynamic, real-world clinical settings. This research advances implementation science by highlighting EBI adaptation as a potential strategy to promote widespread implementation and sustainability in hospitals of all resource levels.

Eksperimentalni pristup. Polifenolni spojevi i askorbinska kiselina određeni su elektrokemijskom i spektrofotometrijskom metodom.
Rezultati i zaključci.
Novina i znanstveni doprinos.
